By Lee Dobbins There are over 25,000 types of orchids and, in fact the Orchidaceae family is the most numerous in the plant world! These beautiful plants have been around for over 100 million years and plants can range from microscopic to reaching several feet in height. The flowers have a distinctive look with 3 inner petals surrounded by 3 outer petals and a cupped petal that is distinct from the others. Some orchids even resemble other creatures like bees, moths and lizards! Although we think of orchids as a tropical flower they can actually grow in almost any climate. They can grow on the ground or on trees and even rocks. Orchids are classified depending on their water requirements. Paphiopedilum, Cymbidium and Odontoglossum need a moist environment all year long. Cattelya, Oncidium and Dendrobium only need water when they are actively growing and the vanda Ascocend doesnt really need water at all. Cymbidium orchids are some of the most popular having 40 species and thousands of hybrids. These are one of the oldest cultivated orchids and can grow on the ground, on trees or on rocks. They can be found growing naturally in Japan, China, South East Asia and Australia. These are one of the easiest orchids for beginners and will flower every year if cared for properly. Perhaps the most exotic of all orchids is the Cattleya which hails from South America. These are the orchids most typically chosen for corsages, however they have been over collected and many of these types of orchids are now endangered. The Denrobiums are the second largest orchid genus and have over a thousand species. These flowers can be found in Northern India, South East Asia, Australia and Polynesia. They typically grow near the equator in tropical conditions, although some grow in climates with dry winters. While these are easy to grow, it is rather difficult to get them to bloom regularly. Phalaenopsis orchids have long lasting flower and are rather easy to grow. These flowers are favorites at weddings and can be colorful in pinks, yellows and stripes. These are native to the Philippines and are quickly becoming a popular house plant. Vanda orchids are another plant that is rather easy to grow. These plants produce flowers in vibrant colors such as blue, red, yeloow and orange. Flower spikes can have as much as 10 blooms that last for several weeks. Orchids are a bit finicky to grow but these delicate plants will reward you with a soothing fragrance and beautiful distinct flowers. When growing orchids in your home, you need to remember to give them enough light, enough water and proper temperatures and fertilization. Orchids will need to be repotted every 2 or 3 years. By Lisa Parmley An article at CNN lists academic research scientists as one of the top three Big jobs that pay badly. The article states that this career track has one of the most disproportionate ratios of training to pay. I believe it. As a one-time research scientist myself, I experienced the low pay first-hand. In all honesty, it was barely enough to support my modest living needs, let alone a family. I found myself in the uncomfortable position of actually making less than a full-time waitress. This was with my Masters degree in Molecular Biology working at a prestigious academic institute. And as much as Id like to say it gets better with more education, I cant. Unfortunately, the salary and job expectations only seem to only worsen with the degree level. If youre a postdoc, you know exactly what I mean. Decades ago, the postdoctoral position was merely a stepping stone on the road to something bigger and better. But today, many postdocs are trapped in their temporary positions. Some spend as long as a decade, or more, just biding their time, searching for their big-break into the small pool of permanent Ph.D. positions. Even those that make it are forced to go where the money is, which might not be where their ideas and dreams would take them. I can imagine if youre in this position, youre probably wondering why Im bringing this up. To rub in how incredibly underpaid you are? No. Instead, I want to let you in on a little secret. Its a shortcut actually. You see, my story changed when I found out that as a scientist, I qualified to begin a career in patent law. All I needed to gain status as a registered Patent Agent was pass an exam conducted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Upon passing this exam, I would be legally eligible to write and prosecute patents in the U.S. Chances are you qualify to take this exam and become a Patent Agent too. A licensed Patent Agent (with no law degree) makes an average expected salary of $74,900 a year (as reported by PayScale.com in 2005). Contrast this with the $45,000 average salary of a Research Associate in the field of Biotechnology. Thats almost $30,000 more in a single year. The salary for a Ph.D. in a postdoc position is a mere $38,000. And the average number of hours a postdoc works in a typical week is 51. If you do the math, it becomes apparent that a postdocs hourly wage is just under $15/hour. This is less than the average salary earned by recent college graduates with only a bachelors degree. Once again, let me remind you of the average salary of a Patent Agent — $74,900 a year. And its not all about money. A career as a Patent Agent has its rewards. Its a highly respectable and honorable career where you may put your knowledge to the test and solve fascinating technical and legal problems. It is your opportunity to really use that science degree (or the degrees) you worked so hard to get and earn the prestige you so deserve. You will be right on the cutting edge of research and development, quite possibly even closer to it than you are today tucked away running experiments in the laboratory. You will be positioned to learn about new and exciting discoveries before anyone else. In addition to the prestige offered by a career in patent law, there is virtually unlimited potential. Patent law is one of the few legal specialties that is actually growing. And since many biotech innovations truly do advance society, you will have the opportunity to do something positive for mankind (which is probably why you became a scientist in the first place). And you may always choose to get a law degree after you gain experience as a Patent Agent. As you might guess, you can expect a higher pay and even more challenges as a Patent Attorney (in fact, the average pay for a Patent Attorney is $100,000 with some partners earning well over $200,000 a year). So with all the benefits of a career in patent law, why dont more scientists opt for this opportunity? Especially when all that stands between them and this career is an exam? Well the truth is, many just dont know the opportunity exists. My goal is to change that. As you can see, passing the Patent Bar exam can open an entirely new career door for you. It can pave the way to a higher salary and a highly rewarding career. So if youre interested in a career change of this sort, please seek out more information today. As you know, shortcuts dont always last forever, especially when the word gets out. By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Steve_C_Clark]Steve C Clark Life is full of surprises. And quite often it brings us circumstances we are not prepared for. Break down of car, mandatory reforms in home, a small surgery needed for family member and many more. And what if our monetary preparations are not sufficient? In such situations we need a financial help so that our normal life is not harmed due to money crises. To help you, U.K. lenders are here with a package of low rate unsecured loans. A low rate unsecured loan is loan which doesnt require any collateral and is given at relatively lower rate. LOW RATE UNSECURED LOANS: AMOUNT Different lenders have different ranges for the amount of small unsecured loans. But over all you can borrow an amount from 1000 to 25,000 with low rate unsecured loans. All you need is to submit a duly filled application form and the money can be in your account the very next day. LOW RATE UNSECURED LOANS: INTEREST RATE Since the loan is of unsecured type, so you might be with the notion that rate of interest should be high. However to your pleasant surprise the low rate unsecured loans as the name signifies come with cheap interest rates. The typical annual percentage rate (APR) IS 6.4% and depending on your personal circumstances it will vary with in 6.4% to 10.4%. Once you fix the APR it remains constant and you will pay the same installment over the period of loan. So a low rate unsecured loan can always help you if you are in financial crises and do not have or wish to offer any asset as collateral. Since the type of loan is unsecured, and the lenders owe a maximum risk, generally small unsecured loan is not meant for the bad credit people. However some of the lenders may lend you the money but obviously some extra charges will be there. LOW RATE UNSECURED LOANS: REPAYMENTS Though the loan amount is less you are not forced to pay the loan in rush. Lenders offer you an average time period of 2 to 7 years for the monthly repayments. The monthly installments you are required to pay depends on your borrowed amount and the time period. Also lenders provide a facility of payment protection cover with which you can protect your monthly repayment in case you are ill or you loose your job. However you will have to shell out some extra pounds to avail this facility. Regarding early repayment different lenders have different course of action. Some of them welcome it but some lenders charge a penalty of up to two months interest if the debt is repaid in full before the agreed end date. So a good planning and choice along with some negotiations will definitely help you take in financial comfort zone. LOW RATE UNSECURED LOAN: CONCLUSION Whether you’re thinking of changing your car, making some home improvements, looking to simplify your finances into a manageable monthly payment or make a lifetime holiday low rate unsecured loan is always here in offering. There is no risk on your property since it is an unsecured loan. You only need to be judicious while selecting the loan. By HPriya Sivan Mom, you dont need a LOreal hair dye, you look elegant with streaks of white here and there..” he grins and then takes a dig at his sister. stop her music classes, dad, at least we can stop hearing her morning brays..!”. He is angry because his pocket money has been cut. Dad was not happy with the previous months happenings in the financial front at his home and he decided to set it right by setting up a budget and strictly enforcing it! Dad decides on budgeting and plans minimize the expenses consciously by reducing expenses on groceries and other domestic expenses. All goes well till the end of the month when suddenly they have guests from a far off country. It was pitiable when the head of the family started counting the few notes again and again. He seeks help from his saviour the credit card. We will surely make it this month dad says. Poor dad does not know that he would have to shell out a few notes for a wedding gift in a few days. The invitation was yet to come. Finally the family gives up and decides to face the expense as it comes. The reason why they quit is they really dont know what budgeting is. There are many advantages in budgeting. Can anyone imagine the government or a major corporation operating without a budget? A budget is a guide to measure our financial progress. Before the credit cards came into use, we had the real money to deal with, and we could actually know what we were doing with the money. But now the improper usage of credit card may make us live beyond our means and get us knee deep into debts. Budgets actually help us in meticulous planning of handling money and those cards and give us the extra money, which we need during times of emergency. We sleep better at nights not worrying about the tomorrow when we would have to meet those heavy expenses. The latest trend is to plan budget on how to reduce spending money. To spend less is to save more. Set realistic goals, try to fit in the budget according to situations and update the budget as and when required. Let the budgeting process be a tool to spend less and save more! By John Hacking Foggy or undefined business goals - your web site needs a purpose. For example, the purpose of my web site is: “to support word-of-mouth and classified advertising of my web design services to small businesses and sole traders in the CBD and southern suburbs of Brisbane. I will know if it is successful if it generates an average of at least five enquiries or three sales per month.” A Bad Business Model - a great web site will not save a bad business model. If you cannot state in one sentence what you have to offer, or why you are different to your competitors, then you have major marketing problems. Remember, your web pages are competing 21 billion other web pages on the Internet. Without a good business model and marketing and PR support, your business will have difficulty in succeeding. Focusing on style rather than substance - it’s easy to waste a lot of money on fancy Flash pages, Java script, music, graphics and other techniques that add little to your sites value and make it slower to download and harder to navigate. When in doubt - don’t do it. Your web site should be designed so that even people with older versions of browsers and slow old modems can still get the information they need quickly. Trying to be all things to all people - getting found on the Internet means a focused approach to marketing. Pick one product or service offering and build a web site around that one offering. By appealing to different markets with unconnected products means that your search engine rankings will suffer. Pick a profitable niche and focus on that niche. Using a generic domain name - the more unique and memorable your domain name, the better. Domains like pets.com or computer.com describe the product category, not the brand. google.com, dell.com , yahoo.com are easy to say, easy to remember and excellent brand names for the web. Do what they do, choose your online name carefully. Not having a domain name at all - the use of a web address like ispname/~fashionshop looks unprofessional and “small-time”. Invest the $40 or so it costs to have your own domain name. Not thinking like a customer - your web site should anticipate your prospects’ questions and be designed with them in mind. What do they want to know? What’s the best way to tell them? What proof can I offer? Consumers don’t necessarily want to make the best buying decision, they are usually happy just avoiding a bad one. Not listing prices - the second question all prospects ask after “have they got what I’m looking for” is “how much is it?”. If you can give straight pricing, do so. Prospects are looking for value, not necessarily the lowest price. Value = offer/price. If you have a strong offer and your prices are reasonable you will represent value to your prospects. If you don’t state your prices then the value can’t be calculated. If you charge by the hour, state your rates for the type of work you do and a typical project cost. Bad spelling, punctuation or grammar - there’s no excuse for typos, bad spelling or bad grammar. Always get your web site proof read by an independent party. If you do find an error, fix it promptly. Not allowing for growth or updates - your web site design should allow for growth in content and easy changing of content. New product lines, additional locations, extra consumer information should all be catered for without the need for a major site redesign. This website uses what’s called a content management system. Not considering search engines - The primary way people will find you online is via search engines like google, altavista and sensis. By adding key words to the header of your web pages, using paragraph headings, linking to related sites and other techniques, you can improve your ranking in search results. Investing too much in electronic order taking systems - if you expect to receive less than 10 orders per day from your web site, it’s probably far easier to use a simple order form and manual credit card processing using your EFTPOS machine than building real-time electronic payment processing systems. For low to medium volumes, another option is the range of merchant tools from PayPal. It takes about 5 minutes to insert a Buy Now button on your web page that allows customers to pay immediately by credit card. Investing too little in online marketing - in most cases it pays to invest in online marketing. Unlike traditional media, with online marketing you can choose your daily budget and the cost-per-click of your marketing campaign. With good reason, Goggle Adwords is the leader in pay-per-click advertising. Learn about Adwords or hire a consultant who does. For about $5 -$10 per day you can get yourself a source of steady, qualified leads. Not responding quickly to inquiries that come via the Internet - the Internet works very quickly. It takes less than a second to send an e-mail from Australia to Europe. Internet users are impatient. They want immediate results. If you take a few days to answer and e-mail there’s a good chance you’ve already lost the sale to someone who understands this and acts quickly. Check your e-mail twice a day and once a day on weekends if possible. Unreadable pages - your pages should be clean, simple and readable. Red writing on a black background may look rather funky, but it is hard to read and will lose visitors quickly. Similarly with fonts. Only use fonts that you would usually see in a mainstream newspaper or magazine. Unprintable pages - if you use lots of graphics and coloured text on coloured backgrounds it my be difficult for prospective customers to print out your pages. Black on white/cream works well. It’s easy to read as well as cheap and fast to print. Using stock photos and graphics - photos can really ad impact to a web page, but don’t be tempted to use the same stock photos that everyone else does. You know what I mean, “man with briefcase running” or “business meeting” or “close-up of pen on table” or even “business handshake closing a deal”. These are the sort of cheesy images a 12 year old would put in a school project. If possible, use original photos of you and your business. Bad site navigation - it should take a maximum of three clicks for your reader to find the information they are looking for. 40 seconds is the average time a person will spend scanning your web site to see if you have want they want. By Annie Kaszina Harriet*s face had been etched into a mask of anxiety and pain by the years spent putting herself last while she tried to make bad relationships work. She came up to me on the last day of the course Id been running on Domestic Violence Recovery to tell me how far she had come along her journey. She said shed learned so much that shed wished shed known before. She also said that in recent years she had made better relationships. Shed been through domestic violence and wasnt going there any more. Her latest relationship, which had ended during my course, had not been abusive, but her partner had been difficult, the kind of man who pulls you down. He was, she said, always negative, with no energy, someone who needed her to support him emotionally the whole time. She had found him a drain. He was someone who didnt say or do very much. He relied on her to lift his spirits and do all the caring. He didnt lift a finger around the house, or even buy the occasional bottle of wine to show willing. But still, she had been sad when it had ended because he was a lovely person; he was just a little depressed and depressing her judgement not mine. Then, as she continued to think about her lovely ex, Harriets face changed completely. She said, more to herself than me: Actually, you know, he was abusive. It is abusive to pull your partner down and contribute nothing to a relationship, but take, take, take. She ran quickly through his behaviours and attitudes again registering his constant lack of respect and consideration of her feelings and re-evaluating her entire relationship. And then she said it: Thank God hes gone - the very phrase that became my refrain after my own unlovely partners departure. Harriet had started to see all the limitations that a depressive, inconsiderate partner imposed on her life and all the opportunities and options that lay before her without him there to blight them. It wasnt that she envisaged a future of wild days and nights partying with beautiful people in exotic places. What she saw was being able to return home after a days work, free to do exactly what she wanted. She saw the simple pleasures of being able to cook herself a meal - or not - chat to a friend, flop in front of the television, or soak in a hot tub without the constant need to worry about and lift another persons mood. She saw herself actually having the space to put herself first for once and even love herself first. Instead of last. She saw herself as blessed by his departure, rather than proved to be a failure as a woman and a partner. She saw it as the start of a new and rewarding period in her life her relationship with herself rather than the end of her last hope of ever being in a relationship. She saw it as the door slamming on a miserable past, rather than slamming on any hope of ever creating a worthwhile future. She saw that his presence, rather than his absence, diminished her. She saw that she had a far greater chance of dreaming, and achieving her dreams, without him than she had ever had with him. And instead of bemoaning the failure of the relationship and her single status, she rejoiced in the promise of her future. Thank God, hes gone. Thank God, Harriet can see that anyone who brings her down and disregards her feelings is abusive and that life will be far, far richer without him. *not her real name (C) 2006 Annie Kaszina Annie Kaszina Ph D, is a coach and writer who has helped hundred of women to rebuild their confidence and their life after an abusive relationship. By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Caitlin_Lucy]Caitlin Lucy The first camera phone - ‘J-SH04′ was introduced in Japan in November 2000. In the span of the last six years, the camera have taken many giants leaps and now threatening to outgrow the phone itself. Imagine a high definition camera with digital zoom, auto focus and everything you’d expect in it that also doubles up as a 3G mobile phone. Thats Nokia N73 for you. We are yet to realize it but the future of mobile imaging is already here. Nokia regards their N-series models as multimedia computers and rightly so. The size, resolution and color depth of pictures taken by the N73 strongly justifies that. The integrated 3.2 mega pixel camera uses a CMOS sensor to get the great shot. But what makes the picture perfect is the Carl Zeiss auto focus lens with the mechanical shutter. You can develop images of ‘actual’ photos quality up to 25 x 20 cm size. The Nokia N73 also records high quality videos at a maximum 352 x 288 resolution in MPEG4 format. There is also a second VGA camera with video conferencing. What makes the N73 more appealing is the simplicity it maintains despite its extraordinary capabilities. It has a straightforward candy bar design and an absolutely standard keypad. The rocker keys serves as control for volume when you’re listening to music or talking to someone as well as zoom keys when you are taking photographs. The camera is active the moment to slide the protective cover. The company have done a good job by keeping it simple and easy which surprisingly not common in other smart phones. Quad band, with EDGE and UMTS, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), Video calling, Call Conferencing, MS Office and PDF document viewer, web and WAP browser, - the Nokia N73 have the answers to everything you’d want from a 3G phone. By Rudy Silva Fruits are made by nature and are a perfect food. They contain the right balance of nutrients with distilled water. You gain enormous benefits from eating fruits especially if you eat the outer skin and eat them without cooking. They are easy to digest and absorb and do not stress your colon. Fruits contain fiber, which help to cleanse your colon and prevent constipation. Most fruits help provide the body with minerals that help the body reduce acid as it is created. And most important of all, fruits help cleanse the body of mucus slime that accumulates throughout the body. Fruits do not leave any slime residue in the body when eaten except when they have pesticides and preservatives in their outer skin. They do not ferment or putrefy in your colon, as do processed foods, dairy products and meats. Choose your fruits carefully. They should be eaten when they are fully ripe. Do not eat them if they are under ripe or overripe. In the under ripe condition they may be acidic and in the overripe condition the many contain more natural sugar. Fruits, vegetables, and grains contain fructooligosaccharides, FOS. It is this compound that helps to feed the good bacteria in your colon. Without an adequate supply of FOS, good bacteria will dwindle and bad bacteria will flourish. Just Plain Fruits Eat fruits throughout the day but especially in the evening. This will help to promote a bowel movement in the morning. These are the fruits you should eat. * Apples * Apricots * Avocados * Bananas * Blueberries * Boysenberries * Cantaloupes * Cherries * Figs and dates * Grapes * Lemons * Papayas * Peaches * Pears * Persimmons * Plums * Prunes * Raspberries Apples Eat 3-4 apples a day to relieve constipation. It does not matter what type of apple you eat, but I like gala or Fuji apples since they are small and crisp. It is best to use fresh organic apples when eating apples as a snack since you will not know what pesticides were used in growing the apples. If apples are not organic, it is better to peel the apple before eating. Using baked apples also helps to clear constipation. Eat one baked apple at night, right before bedtime, and one just upon rising. Do this until you constipation is cleared. In his book, John Heinerman, Heinermans Encyclopedia of Fruits, Vegetables and Herbs, describes how to bake apples: Cut apples in half and clear out the centers. Add chopped dates to the center. Pour some cranberry juice over the dates and apples. Then sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg on the top. You can pour cranberry juice on some of the apples and see if you like the taste after they are cooked. Cook apples for 46-60 min at 375-400 C. Dried Apples Dried apple slices are also a good source of fiber. However, when the slices are dehydrated most nutrients are lost but fiber is retained. Sulfur dioxide is typically used to dry apple slices and this can cause allergic or asthmatic reactions in some people. I do not recommend using dried apple slices in place of fresh organic apples. Just Apples and Mineral Water Just after waking, eat two unpeeled apples, chew well, and then drink 8 oz of water that has two drops of Alkalife. Or, you can use any other mineral additive or supplement you use. This combination of apples and activated mineral water will stimulate your colon to become less sluggish and to move fecal matter out of the rectum. I find Alkalife on e-Bay. This product cost $29.00 on the Internet, but I have bought it for $17.00 on e-Bay. Using fruits to relieve or clear constipation is a powerful natural remedy. By Frank Child molesters and abductors usually look like everyday people. They can be anybody, the teacher, next door neighbor, mailman and they come in all ages, old and young. Tell your kids not to talk to adults they do not know. Anytime they are approached by an unfamiliar adult they should check with a parent or trusted adult immediately! Often times they will befriend a child by asking for help or offering something for they attention. Some examples are: Asking to help find a lost item or pet, offering reward money or for the very young ones candy or toys for assistance, saying they are good friends with mom or dad, acting like a police officer (children should only approach uniformed police officers, and/or marked police cars). They may also gain your child’s trust by very minor contacts over several days, such as saying hello to them repeatedly. Make sure your children know to tell you if a stranger is trying to make friends with them right away! Child molesters and abductors who prey on children wait for the right opportunity, like when the child is alone. Children should not be outside their home by themselves, even for short periods of time. They should walk to and from school and bus stops in groups. Working together with other families in your neighborhood to develop a formal plan for kids to walk together is a good idea. Parents are encouraged to join or organize a Neighborhood Watch program in their community. A car or other vehicle such as a van is often the means by which the abductor kidnaps the child from the neighborhood. Children should never approach a vehicle unless they are absolutely sure they know the occupants. Abductors entice children to walk near their vehicles with some type of gift or questions and then pull them inside. If children routinely see the same car parked (or following them) on their normal walking routes (to and from school, etc.) they should report it to trusted adults immediately! And the local police should be notified if strange activity is apparent! Here are some statistics: Approximately 879,000 children (or 12.2 per 1,000) were maltreated (neglected or abused) in 2000. Sixty-three percent of maltreated children were neglected, nineteen percent were physically abused, ten percent were sexually abused, and eight percent were emotionally or psychologically maltreated. In 2000, 51.9 percent of child victims of maltreatment were female, and 48.1 percent were male. The rate of victimization of children was inversely related to the age of the child. Children from birth to age 3 were victimized at the highest rate. More than half of all child victims were white (50.6 percent), almost a quarter were black (24.7 percent), and nearly a sixth (14.2 percent) were Hispanic. American Indian/Alaska Natives made up 1.6 percent of victims, and Asian-Pacific Islanders accounted for 1.4 percent. Nearly nine percent of child victims experienced recurrence of maltreatment within six months of the initial substantiated incident. The majority of perpetrators of child maltreatment in 2000 were women (59.9 percent), while men accounted for 40.1 percent. Seventy-nine percent of perpetrators were parents of the maltreated child, and other relatives made up 8.5 percent of perpetrators. Both parents were perpetrators in 18.7 percent of cases. Thirty-seven children were killed by their babysitter in 2001.
