How To Ensure Early Bulbs Bloom, Year After Year

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By James Kilkelly I often notice when visiting gardens the great quantities of Daffodils and other early bulbs that we plant to herald in the spring. But how do we ensure we have a great display each year? The early flowering bulbs Quite a few seasoned gardeners have had their first horticultural experience by the planting of a few Daffodil or Tulip bulbs, thus spurring them onto more adventurous plantings. At the end of April the very early flowering bulbs will come to the end of their blooming season. This group of early bloomers includes Daffodils, Hyacinths, Bluebells, Crocus, Snowdrops and early Tulips. All these bulbs will flower well for any gardener the first growing season but for them to bloom well the following seasons we must give them some care. Dieback not tieback All bulbs leaves must be allowed a minimum of six weeks after flowering to die down, so if these bulbs are planted in a lawn that area of lawn must remain uncut for six weeks. Refrain from tying your Daffodil leaves in knots to neaten their appearance, also avoid folding them over and securing with rubber bands. If the bulbs leaves are naturally allowed to die back then they will take in the energy for next years flowering. I would also recommend nipping off the spent flower heads on bulbs once flowering is finished, this will prevent the bulb using vital energy for seed production instead using all that energy to bulk up its food store for next season. Don’t forget to feed The final tip for blooming bulbs next spring is to feed your bulbs, this is especially important if you have a hungry soil. Apply a foliar feed to the fully emerged leaves before the blooms start to form. Choose a general purpose purpose liquid feed.I would also advise you to feed your bulbs just as the blooms have faded with a granular bulb fertiliser applied around the bulbs base. This is the most important feed they will receive. Ensure this feed has a higher potassium or potash content than nitrogen content. Apply according to the manufacturers instructions and heed safety warnings. James Kilkelly runs a professional garden design service in Galway, Ireland. Efficacy and Safety of Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Depression Published in Journal

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Charles Donovan On September 1st, the efficacy and safety of vagus nerve stimulation for depresssion was published in the prestigious peer reviewed journal of Biological Psychiatry. The data from the pivotal clinical trial of vagus nerve stimulation and depression was been on published September 1st, in the prestigious peer-reviewed journal of Biological Psychiatry. There were three articles published in Biological Psychiatry about VNS Therapy and depression. The articles confirm the association of VNS Therapy with significant antidepressant benefits that are sustained and/or growing over one year for patients with chronic or recurrent treatment-resistant depression. Secondly, the long-term safety of the procedure was confirmed. “The response and remission and sustained long-term benefits realized by the patients treated with adjunctive VNS Therapy is remarkable, given that participants in the trials were some of the most treatment-resistant, depressed patients ever studied, with at least half having been hospitalized for the disease at least once,” commented Dr. A. John Rush, MD, Professor and Vice Chairman for Research, Department of Psychiatry, Betty Jo Hay Chair in Mental Health, Rosewood Corporation Chair in Biomedical Science, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX. “The VNS studies presented in these publications provide substantial evidence of a growing benefit of VNS Therapy over time when other treatments have not worked or have stopped working. This is particularly encouraging given the nature of treatment-resistant depression, a devastating and difficult to treat condition.” The publication of these articles is very important to you because third party payers (private insurance companies, Medicare, etc.) will help facilitate the approval of reimbursement of VNS Therapy for depression. Although reimbursement decisions will continue to be on a case-by-case basis, this is a critical next step which will be viewed very positively by insurance companies, Medicare as well as your psychiatrist. Marketing Made Simple

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By Mike Myatt One of the most entertaining things you can do in business is to attend a meeting where a group of senior executives begin to pontificate on the subject of marketing. I have more fun watching people attempt to distinguish between marketing, advertising, branding, mediums, channels, markets, verticals, sectors, business development, sales, communications, public relations, etc. It never ceases to amaze me at how something so simple can become so convoluted, and how people can so passionately take a completely ridiculous stance and want to defend that position to the death. In this blog post I will attempt to demystify the subject of marketing and give you some actionable items can be implemented immediately to generate improved results. Lets take a moment and have some fun with definitions. The following two definitions of marketing come from the American Marketing Association. The first was a definition was used from 1985 until 2004 when the revised edition was released by the AMA. Previous AMA Definition: Marketing is the process of planning and executing conception, pricing, promotion and distribution of goods, ideas and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational goals. Current AMA Definition: Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders. OKa quick analysis of the two aforementioned definitions shows that the mistake of obviating the customer from the original definition was corrected by the clear and emphasized inclusion of the customer in the revised definition (I guess I wont resign my AMA membership just yet). Let me be clear that Im not meaning to make fun of academic theory or best practices, but I have little use for generic, omnibus or overarching statements as they tend not to accomplish anything of value, but rather they just create confusion among the ranks. Lets take a look at a few more definitionsMost of you know how fond I am of Druckerisms and so in good conscience I must quote him to you yet againPeter Druckers definition of marketing is: Marketing and innovation are the two chief functions of business. You get paid for creating a customer, which is marketing. And you get paid for creating a new dimension of performance, which is innovation. Everything else is a cost center. Now were getting a bit closer, but this is still too ambiguous for my taste From my perspective the problem with marketing as a discipline is that the desired result often gets lost in the vast expanse of its multi-disciplinary nature. The reality is that marketing is really the aggregation of any activity that touches the customer and that is just too much for most organizations to get their arms around, let alone to manage and execute on. So, at the end of the day I believe marketing is any activity that catalyzes a selling opportunity (my definition). Put simply I want marketing activities to make my phone ring! I dont care what the medium, market or message is, if it doesnt put a qualified prospect into a selling situation it is a waste of time, money and effort. Before the Myatt bashers come out of the shadows, Im not diminishing the value of brand equity, market share, mind share, etc., but Im simply trying to take a complex subject and make it real and actionable. If youre conducting brand campaigns or mind share initiatives thats fine, but realize that in most circumstances while these may classically be defined as marketing activities these efforts dont catalyze sales opportunities in the short run. The litmus test of any good gorilla marketing effort is measuring return on cost of sales. A great marketing campaign generates a high velocity of selling opportunities at the lowest possible cost over the shortest possible selling cycle. If you juxtapose this with the typical branding initiative youll see that these two efforts are truly diametrically opposed. So the goal of marketing is to not get caught up in theoretical debates and academic exercises, but to realize that the main thing, is to keep the main thing the main thing. If you cant put every marketing initiative under the magnifying glass and tie it to an acceptable return based on the generation of sales then you might want to reconsider what youre doing. Summer Wedding: Garden Party Theme

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By Jen Carter Take love to the outdoors! Why have a bunch of loved ones sit in a hot stuffy room when you can be out embracing the warm summer weather? This is where the garden party theme comes into play for your wedding ideas. Where can you have a garden party? A private park, a beautiful yacht club, or the yard of your own home. What does it take to pull off a successful garden party? Patience! Start planning your wedding decorations and preparations in advance. Who have you invited to the wedding? The young and elderly need a lot of shade on very hot days. Make sure that you have shady trees or large umbrellas to protect them from the hot sun. On that note, its important to emphasize sunscreen for all! You want everyone to have wonderful stories to tell for years! Not stories of the most painful sunburn of 2006. Its not very difficult to emphasize nature in a pastoral setting. Prepare tiki torches and electrical multi-colored lights if the party will extend into the late hours. Citronella candles will keep biting insects at bay while providing extra light. Set up a Gazebo for foods and desserts. Everyone will form a line and serve themselves. Prepare garden salads, fruits, vegetables, floral cakes, and plenty of cold salads. Make sure you have plenty of chairs and tables for your guests to sit in. You can decorate the area with flowers pots, faux bumble bees, small summer statues that emit water, and ivy. Play relaxing music throughout the day and pull out the real dancing music after supper. Encourage women to take of their high heels and have a good time. Encourage men to loosen their ties and live a little. You want everyone to have a great time in a lively atmosphere. Make sure your music is appropriate for everyone. While younger people like the popular hits on the radio, older people may enjoy a blast from the past. If you hire a DJ, make sure they do requests. A garden theme party, is exactly as it sounds. Its a summer wedding that embraces life, nature, and everything beautiful in this world. Make sure you hold your party in a desirable safe location for children to wander and play free from harm. If theres a lake or pond, make sure that an older child never leaves little ones unattended. If everyone has a responsibility, your summer wedding party is sure to be a smash! Nursing Scholarship: An Invite to the Dying Profession

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Low Jeremy Over the past years, there is a significant in the number of students who are taking up the course that leads to become nurses. In fact, nearly 100,000 vacant slots for nurses have been reported in 2005. And since America needs healthcare services, 100,000 are very big number and needs to be responded immediately. Yes, the government has made international call for help. This results to the influx of nurses from all over the world especially from the Philippines and India. But then, we cannot say that it is enough. The country should not always be taken cared of by others. It should be taken cared of their very citizen. However, as nationalistic as it may sound, the fact still remains that very few Americans are taking this problem seriously and very few Americans dont like the idea of working at the hospital unless they are doctors. As a good response, institutions and other local governments have supported the call for the promotion of nurses are a good profession. And one way to do that is by offering several types of nursing scholarships all across the country. Nursing scholarship is not different from other types of scholarship. Before the student becomes a nursing scholar, he or she has to go through exams and screening processes. The student has to submit the necessary documents similar to other students who apply for other types of scholarship. If the student passes, he or she will receive as much as 100% financial aids. The nursing scholar will receive allowances for books, laboratory materials, dorm and lodging, foods, and everything a regular scholar would get. Of course, all these would depend on the institution that grants the scholarship. Others may give different amounts but the same principle applies; to invite students to take nursing for free or almost free. If becoming an RN has never been your dream or has never been they chosen profession, remember this: if you cannot afford to finance your studies and have no choice but to apply for a scholarship program, consider nursing scholarship. Not only you would save the dying profession, you will also get the honor to take care of your citizens. Who knows, it could be your relative lying on a hospital bed without a nurse to assist him (her). Act now for your future. Fat Cells, Your Diet, and Losing Weight

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Janet Roache This may come as a surprise… More than half of all adultsthat reside in the United States are overweight. That is 100million people! I personally have struggled with weight management. Myweight has fluctuated almost 30 lbs. Can you believe it.One month I weighed 115 pounds and 6 months later I am upto 145 pounds. Have you ever wondered what that mystery fat is? When aindividual packs on 20 pounds what is happening inside theirbody? In this article I will explain what “fat cells” areand how they work So where are all these fat (adipose tissue) cells located? Fat can be discovered in several places on your body. Mostfat is located underneath your skin. Other spots aredetermined by whether you are a woman or man. Most women tend to carry fat in their hips, breasts, buttocks, and waist. This gives you the pear shapesyndrome. On the other side of the spectrum adult men carry the fat intheir chest, buttocks, and abdomen (gut) which gives you theapple shape (aka beer gut syndrome). Sex hormones dictate thedifferent locations of fat tissue amongst man and woman. Did you know that the human body contains two types of fat tissue? Most people are unaware of this. Brown fat, which is found mostly in newborn babies, helps with heat insulation. There is also white fat. White fat is important for your metabolism and heat insulation. Fat cells are what make up fat tissue. Think of a fat cell as a small (very small) container that holds 1 drop of fat. How does fat enter your body? When you eat fatty foods it goes through your stomach and your intestines. It is the job of your intestine to break down the fat into smaller parts. Of course this is a complex process that occurs. We could write a whole other article on this topic alone. So let’s take a moment to talk about how your body actually breaks down fat. When your body sits idle it still needs fuel to run. Your body will go to your internal energy stores (not literally) of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Your body’s #1 source of energy is glucose (sugar). So how do you gain or lose weight you ask? Your actual weight is determined by the rate you store that energy after you eat and the rate at which you burn this energy. So in general what you need to do to lose weight is as follows: a. Eat a balanced diet, which balances the three ingredients I mentioned above (glucose, fat, and protein) b. Do not over eat. Keep your calories around 2000 per day c. Regular exercise, 3 to 4 times a week for 30 minutes In conclusion, you have learned that there are two types of fats. Also, if you burn less stored energy then you use, then you start to gain weight. You can prevent this weight gain by maintaining a healthy 2000 calorie diet per day mixed in with 3 days of exercise. Remember that each individual’s body is different. Try to customize a plan that works for you. I personally use an exercise bike while reading a book. I also play racquetball to mix up my workouts and to make the workout fun. The Wonderful Art of Bonsai

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Jay Smith The potential for enjoyment of Bonsai trees is enormous. These are the dwarf-sized trees that have been developed in the Asian countries of China and Japan for many hundreds of years. Most people have to go out to a forest to experience the marvelous plants that we call trees. But in the hands of a master Bonsai creator, the beautiful trees can be reduced in size to the point where they can be brought indoors to be enjoyed at any time. And the person who learns this age-old art so that he or she learns how to create this small piece of beauty experiences even more of a thrill — something closely akin to producing a child, but with the added advantage of being able to shape and design it themselves. And these trees grow more beautiful with age. Some renowned trees are as old as five hundred years or more. Naturally, they need nurturing and care, just as any prized possession does, especially things that are living and developing, in the same way a child develops. But the care that is needed is not difficult, though it may require some time and some special equipment (not overly-expensive). And, of course, these beautiful trees can be purchased at any Bonsai nursery. Usually it never enters the head of the admirer of Bonsai that they have the potential of creating them on their own. Becoming a member of any local Bonsai Club (they’re virtually everywhere) will provide all the support and direction a person might require. It’s exciting to sit in front of one of these miniature trees and realize that this tiny tree in its tiny pot might otherwise be growing tall in some forest somewhere. And you can pick it up, turn it, and see all sides of it without leaving your chair. They truly are a marvel, these Bonsai trees. The word Bonsai itself means “tree in a pot.” And there is not just a single species of tree that is adaptable to your particular area. There are hundreds — even species that would normally not be considered a tree, such as shrubs, bushes and even plants like roses and many herb species. But, no matter what kind of plant you may have in your pot, it’s always called a “tree” in Bonsai language. I was fortunate enough to have been able to study with the great master, John Naka, also addressed as “Sensei” (master teacher). Sadly, Sensei Naka left us a few years ago, and has been greatly missed by all who knew him and knew of him. He wrote the consummate manual on the subject of Bonsai, which was his true passion. He traveled all over the world to teach and judge competitions and he loved every minute of it. He made his home in Southern California, but the world was truly his, gaining enormous respect wherever he traveled. If you’re thinking of creating or buying a Bonsai tree, you must bear one thing in mind at all times — these are living things, and do require care and even love. You can’t go away on vacation for a week or two and expect to find your tree alive when you return — unless you’ve wisely made arrangements to have someone take care of your tree for you. And that person must know intimately the requirements of the tree. A trusted neighbor who, upon seeing the tree for the first time, says, “Oh, isn’t that cute?” is not the person to entrust your tree with. The principle tree for a beginner to start with is the Japanese Black Pine (pinus thunbergii), primarily because its the easiest to grow and work with, and also that it’s available in most areas and climates. It can be grown anywhere in the U.S. and most of North America. It’s extremely hardy and adaptable to even adverse weather conditions and makes a superb-looking Bonsai tree. If youre looking for a new adventure and hobby, I believe youll be happy and contented with your own Bonsai trees. Its an especially good interest for people who are home-bound, and who need something to make them feel vibrant and needed, and to give them continuing joy. Types Of Orchids

Monday, April 7th, 2008

By Lee Dobbins There are over 25,000 types of orchids and, in fact the Orchidaceae family is the most numerous in the plant world! These beautiful plants have been around for over 100 million years and plants can range from microscopic to reaching several feet in height. The flowers have a distinctive look with 3 inner petals surrounded by 3 outer petals and a cupped petal that is distinct from the others. Some orchids even resemble other creatures like bees, moths and lizards! Although we think of orchids as a tropical flower they can actually grow in almost any climate. They can grow on the ground or on trees and even rocks. Orchids are classified depending on their water requirements. Paphiopedilum, Cymbidium and Odontoglossum need a moist environment all year long. Cattelya, Oncidium and Dendrobium only need water when they are actively growing and the vanda Ascocend doesnt really need water at all. Cymbidium orchids are some of the most popular having 40 species and thousands of hybrids. These are one of the oldest cultivated orchids and can grow on the ground, on trees or on rocks. They can be found growing naturally in Japan, China, South East Asia and Australia. These are one of the easiest orchids for beginners and will flower every year if cared for properly. Perhaps the most exotic of all orchids is the Cattleya which hails from South America. These are the orchids most typically chosen for corsages, however they have been over collected and many of these types of orchids are now endangered. The Denrobiums are the second largest orchid genus and have over a thousand species. These flowers can be found in Northern India, South East Asia, Australia and Polynesia. They typically grow near the equator in tropical conditions, although some grow in climates with dry winters. While these are easy to grow, it is rather difficult to get them to bloom regularly. Phalaenopsis orchids have long lasting flower and are rather easy to grow. These flowers are favorites at weddings and can be colorful in pinks, yellows and stripes. These are native to the Philippines and are quickly becoming a popular house plant. Vanda orchids are another plant that is rather easy to grow. These plants produce flowers in vibrant colors such as blue, red, yeloow and orange. Flower spikes can have as much as 10 blooms that last for several weeks. Orchids are a bit finicky to grow but these delicate plants will reward you with a soothing fragrance and beautiful distinct flowers. When growing orchids in your home, you need to remember to give them enough light, enough water and proper temperatures and fertilization. Orchids will need to be repotted every 2 or 3 years.
