My Memories Of Phyllis Ray

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Benjamin Cox I have no memory of the year Phyllis Ray came to the Baptist Home or how long she lived there. My first memory of her began in Monticello, Arkansas in Mrs. Belts, seventh grade class. She sat near the teacher’s desk and I sat behind and to her right. Although there were other times and places or activities when I remember her being around such as the time she asked me to go with her but my infatuation began in that early classroom. Phyllis was a small girl with a slim figure whose head sit atop a long slim neck. Her facial features were thin with a nose that seemed too large for her face. It was not really that big it’s just that she was a small girl. Also she usually wore a pair of faded blue denim pants that fit her rather tight with a sleeveless blouse hanging on the outside. Those times that she wore shoes they were slipped on over her bare feet. I mention that because it was not uncommon for the boys to go barefooted and most likely the girls did too. As twelve year kids, she and I shared a common music teacher for a year. However Phyllis studied with Mrs. Dean much longer than I She became so accomplished at the piano she once entered a talent contest and won. She sure did, and the finals were held on TV. When it was announced that she had won, the audience erupted into whistles and yells of “you showed em girl!” Then during a thunderous applause, they requested an encore. Phyllis was not prepared for an encore and had not prepared a second piece. Such a thing had not entered into her mind. Therefore, Phyllis apologized by explaining that she had time to prepare only the one piece of music then played the same piece again. Phyllis was a young girl about fifteen at the time. She could have played any one of a hundred songs from memory but none to the level of the one that won for her and she didn’t want to disappoint the audience. The audience again applauded their approval and requested another encore to which Phyllis played the piece for the third time and stepped down. Now, the part about her asking me to go with her happened much later when we were about sixteen or seventeen. I remember us standing outside between the concrete slab and the fishpond (filled in by this time) when I came up to her. I think she had requested another person to ask me to meet her there. Anyway, she asked me to go with her. When I turned her down for, she asked me why. I don’t remember the reason, only that it happened. Phyllis Ray was the first girl I really took a liking to while in the Home. She was twelve or thirteen at the time and I’m sure she didn’t realize that there was this crazy boy watching her every move. If she ever reads this story Phyllis will surely kill me or, at the least be shocked that anyone would write such a tale. She sat in the front row (seventh grade) by the teacher’s desk while I sat just behind and to her right. I could see everything she did. Young Love’ was a big hit back in those days, and she doodled a lot on her paper while the teacher was talking. In the margins of her notebook paper, she wrote famous artists’ names and the popular songs of the day in the margins of her notebook paper and did it in such a neat way. The writing had such smooth curves, at various angles with different fonts, upside down and all over the blank spaces on her paper. I don’t know what attracted me to her, other than she was a very pretty girl. But, as each day passed as she doodled and I watched, I became more and more attracted to her. The sugar and spice routine continued for some time until one day she picked her nose. Just like a boy, she found a `booger’ rolled it around between her thumb and middle finger then brushed it off her finger to ultimately let it down to the floor below. There I sat, dumbfounded. All my life I had thought girls were different and only boys were snails, nails and puppy dog tails. I recovered from the shock however, and for some time remained her secret boy friend and to this day I make a capital `P’ with a large sweeping curve just like she did back when we were in Mrs. Belts seventh grade class. “The Lost Tomb of Jesus” - Does It Fit The Very Definition of Oxymoron?

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By John Durr Webster’s says an oxymoron is a combination of contradictory or incongruous words. An example would be, it was so hot, it was cold. I would contend that it would also include using the Bible as reliable evidence in order to prove the Bible is unreliable. Either the Bible is reliable or it is unreliable, it can’t be both. The makers of the documentary The Lost Tomb of Jesus rely very heavily on the Bible to support their claims that they have found the lost tomb of Jesus and his family. Yet, if you follow their theory to its logical end, in order to accept their theory as correct, you must accept the Bible as unreliable. This is an oxymoron, you can’t have it both ways. Either the Bible is reliable or it is unreliable, it can’t be both. The documentary was produced by Oscar winning director James Cameron. Its director was Symcha Jacobovici and one of its lead consultants was University of North Carolina scholar James Tabor. The documentary aired on the Discovery channel on March 4, 2007. The documentary suggests that the remains found in a tomb in 1980 are that of Jesus and his family. This is based on ten bone boxes that were found in the tomb. These boxes are known as Ossuaries. The Ossuaries bore crudely etched names. Some of names include: Jesus, son of Joseph; Maria; Mariamene e Mara; Matthew; Judas, son of Jesus; and Jose. The documentary suggests that Jesus, son of Joseph was Jesus Christ. Maria was his mother Mary. Mariamene e Mara was Mary Magdalen, the wife of Jesus and Judus was their son. Jose was the brother of Jesus. One Ossuary was misplaced or stolen. The documentary suggests that a Ossuary that surfaced from a private collection in 2002 is the lost Ossuary from the collection. This Ossuary bears the name James, the master. The documentary suggests that this is James, the brother of Jesus. Except for the name Mariamene, all the names were common during the time of Jesus. James Tabor contends that a second century manuscript uses the name Mariamene for Mary Magdalen. Now Jesus didn’t have a brother named Jose. His brother was named Joses. These names are spelled very similar but they are not the same and they do not have the same meaning. The documentary relies on one speculation on top of another. They present much scientific evidence but this evidence does not lead to any conclusions. If you are interested in some of this evidence and what other experts have said about it, see the article that appeared in TIME magazine. The point I would like to make is that the Bible is clear what happened to Jesus. He rose from the dead. It was not the resurrection of a spirit. His whole body rose from the dead on the third day just as he said he would. King David prophesied, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption (Psalms 16:6). And the body of Jesus did not see corruption; it did not decay because he rose from the dead. The tomb was empty. He told Thomas to touch him and see that his body was real. When his ministry was finished, he ascended into heaven. He is alive today. There was nothing to bury in a tomb. The members of Jesus own family, the Apostles and all his disciples testified to his resurrection. All the Apostles except John were martyred for their faith. They went to their death testifying to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Bible says: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (2 Timothy 3:16). I believe this to be true. You must make your own choice. But you cannot believe it to be true and not true. Either it is reliable or it is unreliable. Many have come to an opinion on the Bible without ever reading it. How can you come to the most important decision in your life without checking it out for yourself? Many have come to their own conclusion on the reliability of the Bible and have based their decision on false teachings. There are many deceivers in the world today. There are many who proclaim to teach the word of God but they mix in lies. We can only identify these lies and teachers of lies after we have studied the word for ourselves. I believe that we all need to study the word of God for ourselves. We cannot rely on others to tell us what it says. If we rely on others, we are setting ourselves up to believe a strong delusion. The Bible is clear that their will be many claiming to be believers who will actually be deceivers. Don’t be deceived, study and learn the truth of God’s word! Begin today! When you study the Bible it must be done with prayer. The Apostle Paul writes: But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. ” (1 Corinthians 2:14) When we pray, we must pray for the Holy Spirit to give us understanding. Jesus made the following promise concerning the Holy Spirit: Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: (John 16:13) Take Jesus at his word and trust him, you won’t be disapointed. John Durr is author of an astounding new eBook entitled: The Soon Coming Judgment of God Upon America And How To Escape It! The book uses Bible prophecy, little known American history and current events to prove that the United States is the Babylon of Bible prophecy. This is a must read for every American because the Bible clearly says Babylon (America) will be destroyed. The book not only describes how the U.S. fulfills every description of Babylon, it carefully shows what the reader needs to do in order to be saved from this coming judgment. Weight Loss and Coffee: Is Your Favorite Cup of Coffee Making You Gain Weight?

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

By Meri Raffetto There is no shortage of coffee houses in the U.S. Whether you live in a small city or large metropolitan area, you will find coffee shops on every corner with gourmet coffee drinks that are truly delicious and provide a caffeine rush as we move through our busy days. These gourmet coffee drinks entered the market place in the mid-1990’s and have steadily been increasing in popularity ever since. They consist of espresso-based drinks such as lattes, espressos, caf mochas, cappuccinos, and iced coffees. Just hearing the names tempts your taste buds. Seeing the coffee shops on every corner and often in your workplace makes it more convenient than eating breakfast. The sizes vary from 10 to 32 ounces and are often prepared with milk, cream, hydrogenated oils, fats, added sugars, and syrups in addition to the coffee making them much higher in calories than you might expect. How is the advent of gourmet coffee affecting weight? A recent study analyzed the gourmet coffee consumption of 165 women attending Simmons College in Boston, MA. The researchers found that the gourmet coffee drinkers had a 206 calorie increase in a typical day and a 32 gram higher sugar intake than the non-gourmet coffee drinkers. This kind of calorie increase can lead to a gradual weight gain over time averaging about 20 pounds per year. Plus the sugar consumption can lead to blood sugar surges that can cause the body to store more calories as fat. To top that off, the sugar and caffeine combination can end up stimulating your appetite leading to even more calories consumed during a typical day. Wonder how many calories and sugar grams are in your favorite drinks? Here is a list to give you an idea. Oh, and just for reference, 250 extra calories per day will lead to a pound weight increase each week or around 24 pound weight increase in a year. The recommendation for sugar consumption is 12 teaspoons or less per day. Regular coffee drinks: Medium brewed coffee 10 calories, 0 grams sugar Medium Caffe Americano 15 calories, 0 grams sugar Now for the gourmet coffees: Medium Caffe Latte 260 calories, 19 grams sugar (5 tsp) Medium Caffe Mocha 400 calories, 33 grams sugar (8 tsp) Medium Caramel Apple Cider 410 calories, 68 grams sugar (17 tsp) Medium Caramel Macchiato 310 calories, 34 grams sugar (9 tsp) Medium Hot Chocolate 350 calories, 40 grams sugar (10 tsp) Medium White Chocolate Mocha 510 calories, 55 grams of sugar (14 tsp) There is no doubt about it. Gourmet coffee drinks are good, but the reality is they are equivalent to eating a dessert. If you are trying to manage you weight then it is best to keep gourmet coffee drinks to a once in awhile treat rather than an every day habit. It’s Your Wedding Too - How To Get Your Partner Involved

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Kit Marsters You’re about to get married. There are still a million things to do (or so it feels!) and you’re receiving advice from all directions. Except for the one direction you could actually do with a bit of input from your husband-to-be. It’s frustrating, but it’s not unusual. I think that many men genuinely think they are doing us a favour by staying well out of it and leaving all the details up to us. Just so we can have the wedding we want. However, it can feel as if they are not at all bothered, and it’s their wedding too. Perhaps it is one of those traditional things still firmly stuck in our dear partner’s brains: man likes woman, man proposes to woman, woman and family arrange the wedding, man shows up. Whatever it is, it is unlikely that we will ever get our men as excited about the perfect colour of napkins as we are, nor are they likely to even see why this could be important. What we can do, is to get them a little bit more involved, at least. Timing Timing is crucial. When your partner has just walked in after a long day at the office, it is not a good idea to pounce him with wedding talk. Most of us are different. We love to chat about how our day went, and how that annoying colleague, you know, the one who was flirting with the guy from new claims at last year’s Christmas party, well she was a right pain in the backside today and oh, I was thinking, pale blue or traditional white for the napkins? He’ll likely just want to sit down, have a cup of coffee and relax for a while. The napkins simply don’t stand a chance. A good time is after dinner, when you’re sitting down and settling into the evening. A full stomach can do wonders. Just have some general chitchat and then mention, casually, that you were pondering napkin colours and just aren’t sure. He still might brush it off and try leave it up to you, but if you gently mention that you just can’t decide and would really like his opinion as it would be a load off your mind, he might give an actual response. Mind you, you might wish to go for the other colour anyway, but that’s up to you. The Roundabout Way You’re snuggled up on the sofa. Your partner is in a relaxed and chatty mood. You still have problems with the seating arrangements at the reception. Now is the time to do something about it. Ask your husband-to-be to tell you some fun family stories. Most likely, some people’s names will come up who will be at the wedding. This is the perfect opportunity to solve issues like Oh, I better not place uncle Harry next to such and such then, shall I? The roundabout way can be a great way to get handy, helpful information for your wedding. If you’re lucky, your partner might not even truly realise he’s talking wedding details, and if he does, he’s not likely to mind. Shopping Perhaps your partner doesn’t mind shopping. And what with the upcoming wedding, he might mind it less than usual he will want you to be happy, otherwise he wouldn’t have proposed to you. Let him have a browse through his favourite stores, and if you can resist, avoid the clothes shops if he tends to have an allergic reaction to them. It might be a good opportunity to solve the napkin problem once and for all, but mind that you don’t go overboard and try to do everything in one day. Last But Not Least I know, it seems hopeless, at times. If you are truly stressing, it’s best to sort the finer details with the aid of your family and friends, and try coax your man into helping you with the more personal issues. It’s often not that they don’t care, even though it may feel that way. From feedback I’ve received from male friends, they just don’t feel qualified to make those kinds of decisions. Mr Fix-Its or not, arranging a wedding can feel as daunting to them as it is to us. You know your man best. It may just take a simple sitting down with him one weekend, explain that you are as clueless as he is, and that you really need his help. He loves you, and I am sure that he will do his best to help make your big day as lovely as possible. Perhaps you both can pick a day and have a laugh going through the lists at a relaxed pace. Good luck, and I hope you have a wonderful wedding. This article has been submitted in affiliation with http://www.Prye.Com/ which is a site for Wedding Invitations. How to Co-Wash Natural Black Hair

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Elle Paris If you wear your hair natural, you are probably familiar with co-washing, or washing the hair with conditioner only. Conditioner washing avoids harsh results from frequent washing with shampoos and helps to keep natural black hair soft and manageable. Co-washing can be done as often as you’d like, even several times a day (this is a plus for natural hair wearers in the hot days of summer). Oftentimes the question of “How do I co-wash my hair?” comes up. The answer would seem simple, but there are some steps you can take to get the most benefit from this technique and do it with ease. * First, find a conditioner that works for your hair type. Search online for keywords “hair types” and narrow your hair type down to one or two close categories. You may be a combo 3c and 4a. This will help you better understand which type of conditioner to purchase among the many available. * Get to know your ingredients. The long, hard-to-pronounce ingredients on the label can be overwhelming. But with familiarity, you can learn to spot which ingredients you want to keep and which you want to avoid. Ingredients like propylene glycol, cetyl alcohol and panthenol are common. Search online for ingredients lists. One such list can be found at http://sci-toys.com/ingredients/ingredients.html. * Recommended: Purchase an extended shower head/hose. Handheld shower heads with variable sprays offer the best control for rinsing the hair and are often well worth the investment. * Rinse the hair with warm water. Avoid water that is too hot (if it initially stings your back, it’s too hot). Cleansing results from the action of water plus cleanser (shampoo and/or conditioner) and agitation (hand movements through the hair). Warm water will clean hair well while hot water can be damaging. While rinsing with water, gently comb your hair with your fingers. * Apply your conditioner. This can be done in several ways. (1) Pour a line of conditioner into your hand (as opposed to pouring a dollop) and apply each line onto parted hair sections. Work the conditioner from the roots to the tips. Continue until all the hair is covered. (2) Squeeze your normal amount of conditioner into a large bowl, preferably plastic. With the shower head, add water to the bowl and mix the water and conditioner well with your hands. Bend your head over the bowl. With a cup or other small container, scoop up some of the mix and pour it onto your hair. You can then lean further over into the bowl and wash your hair with your hands directly over the bowl if you’d like. This allows for even coverage, but note that the conditioner will be more dilute. (3) Squeeze your normal amount of conditioner into a large clean spray bottle and mix with water. Shake well and spray liberally onto the hair. Again, this mixture will be more dilute than a direct application. This method is great for those who only have minutes to spare in the mornings. Make a large batch of diluted conditioner, spray your hair and rinse out after bathing. * Comb your hair with a wide-tooth comb with rounded-edge teeth. This step is optional, as there remains a debate as to whether combing while wet does more damage to hair than combing while dry. It has been said that combing while wet can stretch the hair past it’s longest point, thereby causing breakage. However, many who wear their hair natural report that combing while the hair is fully conditioned is the best time for them, as the hair is soft and pliable, leading to less breakage. In either case, comb hair gently by grabbing one small section at a time. Comb from the TIPS first, ensuring there are no snags then work your way to the roots. It’s ok if you cannot comb from root to tip in one stroke. The main idea is to ease tangles and distribute the conditioner evenly. * Allow the conditioner to set on your hair for at least a few minutes if possible. Both steam from the shower and the conditioner itself will work on your hair during this time. Give yourself a nice salt or sugar scrub while your hair is being conditioned. * Rinse your hair well, again with warm water. Ease your fingers through each section while the water flows through to remove any remaining conditioner. * Optional: Apply your hair products at this step — while your hair is dripping wet. Many naturals swear by this technique and believe the best absorption is gained at this time. At the least, your product(s) can be more evenly distributed throughout your hair while it is sopping wet. * It’s time to dry. Just as with the application, there are several ways to dry your hair. (1) Dry with a towel. Avoid rubbing your scalp and hair with a towel at all costs! Instead, simply dab and pat your hair dry, or grab sections and squeeze excess water into the towel. (2) Shake and go. Lay your towel across the back of your shoulders (lengthwise shoulder to shoulder). Grab the bottom corners of the towel and raise it up to your head, almost over your head. Think of Batman’s cape raised up as he jumps off a tall building! With the towel raised, shake your head from side to side (ear to shoulder) and left to right (like saying no), shaking excess water into the towel. This is what I call the “no touch” method. Sometimes drying the hair directly with a towel can remove products you’ve just applied, even helping to separate your freshly-formed coils and spirals. You want your coils to group together to avoid the frizzies. This method is perfect for the warmer months when you possibly can afford to go longer periods with damp hair. (3) Blow dry, but with care. When blow drying, the use of a diffuser is best. A diffuser will spread the heat from your dryer more evenly and minimize potential heat damage. You can find diffusers at most beauty supply stores at a minimal cost. If you do not have a diffuser, use the low heat or cool setting and blow dry from at least six inches from the furthest part of your hair. Remember, you are not trying to get the hair bone dry — just dry enough to style and go out. In summary, with the above methods you’ll find shampooing your hair by co-washing is a great alternative to traditional shampooing which can strip your hair of much needed oils and moisture. With just a touch of practice, getting in and out of the shower with a clean head of hair will take less time than applying your makeup, and your hair will benefit greatly from it. Good Wedding Speeches Can Add To Wedding Festivities

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Amy Lee Johnson How can there be a wedding without wedding speeches? The bride’s father is the first to do the honors, followed by the groom and then by the Best Man. At some weddings even the maid of Honor may be asked to speak a few words. The guests wait for the speeches to end before heading for the bar, and joining the celebrations. It is not that wedding speeches are not fun. They are. Good speeches can add life and zest to wedding celebrations. But these speeches are few and far between. The majority of the speeches fall flat, because the speaker has not made adequate preparations. Most wedding speeches are today delivered as a ritual. The bride’s father is too busy making arrangements and has not spent sufficient time reciting his lines; the groom is too overwhelmed by the occasion to stand up and deliver; and the Best Man is busy enjoying the attention to worry about the speech. So, what should be done? Should the guests suffer the speeches in silence at wedding after wedding? Or should the speakers realize the importance of the occasion and do justice to the responsibility entrusted to them? The speakers clearly must rise to the occasion. They must put in the same effort in their speeches as the families of the bride and groom have done in making the wedding arrangements. They must remember that they have not been asked to deliver an impromptu or an extempore speech. They had enough time and warning to get their speeches ready. Now that the time has come they must not let the guests down. The best wedding speeches, of course, are those that are delivered at the spur of the moment. But those who are gifted give these speeches. The rest have to work hard to prepare their speeches. They must spend some time putting their thought on paper, ideally at least a month before the big day. When doing so they should not look for smart one-liners to liven up their speeches but talk about the groom, the bride, the family and friends. The speech should not forget the guests who have taken time off their busy schedules to be present for the wedding. It’s a great family occasion, and the speeches must capture this spirit. A good idea is to rehearse the wedding speeches. This helps eliminate unnecessary words or sentences. The speaker does not have to stutter to locate a word or a sentence. His thoughts flow smoothly. More important, they are suited to the occasion, and add to overall joy and festivities. A Monthly Marketing Plan - Tips for Hiring Someone to Develop One for Your Small Business

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Suzanne Lieurance Today many small business owners spend a large amount of their yearly budget for paid advertising to get the word out about their company’s products or services. But what many of these same small businesses fail to do is develop a monthly marketing plan that includes much more than just paid advertisements. If you’re a small business owner you probably spend most of your day running your business. You don’t have time to develop monthly marketing materials, even though you know they can be a VERY important part of promoting your company and acquiring new customers or clients. That’s okay. You don’t need to worry about finding the time for monthly marketing activities if you can simply hire someone to do that for you. Fortunately, there are many marketing companies available that would be glad to do so. Here are some tips for choosing the right company to develop your monthly marketing plan: 1. Look for a company that can devise a monthly marketing plan just for you. The plan that is developed should meet your company’s specific needs and not overwork your advertising budget. In fact, the plan should be a big boon to your paid advertisements in newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, etc. 2. Expect some regular contact with the company that is providing your monthly marketing plan. The company you hire to do your marketing will need regular updates about you and your business in order to continue writing powerful marketing tools that will promote your company. 3. To save money, help the company providing your marketing plan by making sure they have quality digital photos of you, your products, and other aspects of your business (instead of paying the company to obtain these photos for you). 4. Find a company that spends time getting to know “the essence” of you and your business and what you want to convey to the world about your products and/or services. If you have a mission statement, make sure those designing your marketing plan know and understand this statement so they can incorporate it into monthly promotional materials. 5. Look for a company that regularly meets with you to evaluate the effectiveness of the marketing plan. It takes time for any kind of marketing plan to be effective, so don’t expect instant results. Still, you’ll want to spend time evaluating the effectiveness of the plan with the company that is providing it for you. Then you can revise or discontinue the plan if it doesn’t seem to be working. Take some time to compare the services and prices of various companies that can provide you with a monthly marketing plan. Then choose the company that seems to be the best “fit” for you. By Ron Victor A bail bond is framed by the Criminal/Traffic Department where it accepts Payment for the bail in a municipal court prisoner daily. Once bail is posted, the prisoner will be released. Bail is a form of security deposited in order to persuade a release from the court. Refund of bail money which has been posted in criminal/Traffic Department is verified by accounts clerk. Bail bond is a form of security, paid in cash, MasterCard, visa. The bail money will be refunded to the depositor after the judgment of court, unless the judge direct otherwise. If not received, then bail notification letters will be sent to the depositor. It is the responsibility of the co-signer that the premium is paid. This bail bond is good for only one year; if it continues for a longer period then additional premium is collected. Any additional expenses incurred in the transaction, such as long distance calls, travel, posting fees are to be paid by the co-signer to the bail agent .All appropriate paperwork has to be completed first by a deputy clerk in the Criminal/Traffic Division. All bail money posted in the court, the judge will transfer to another court which is processed by accounting clerks Bail law in America: Before independence, American followed British bail laws. After 1776, they framed their own bail laws. The Virginia 1776 constitution, section 9 states that additional bail not required. The 1785 constitution also add that the bail will be let to those who are in custody, not punishable for any crime in life or limb. While a bail will not be admitted, if a party finds guilty. The Pennsylvania constitution of 1776 section 29 states that additional bail shall not be adhered for bailable offenses. In US Federal Bill of Rights, The Eighth Amendment is a resultant from the Virginia Constitution additional bail not required, this clause have no Sense says, Samuel Livermore. Actually what do you mean by additional bail? The court does not determine that the constitutional prohibitions on additional bail apply or not. Bails are of different types: cash bail, surety bail, recognizable bail, signature bail. Cash bail: Cash bail is an amount paid to court to release from custody. The defendant has to pay till the trial gets over. The cash will be refunded when the trial gets over. The bail will be accepted only when the crime is not punishable. Surety bail: This type of bail is given by surety that the obligee will pay the borrowed loan to the investor/bank. Surety bail bonds are giving a security to the investor. If oblige did not pay, the surety has to pay the principal plus interest. Recognizable bail: Here in this type of bond, a promise is given by the defendant to the court that he/ she will have future presence in the court for judicial proceeding. Here bail money is not necessarily paid. Signature bail: When judicial officer imposes signature bond, the defendant should guarantee that he have its future presence in court .when he/ she fail they has to pay the bail amount. Merit of bail bonding: The defendant agree that he will attend future proceedingTill trial , the defendant will release from custodyIt ensures that party will not involve in illegal activity. It ensures that all payment and material will be properly furnished. Demerits of bail bonding: Here in this bail bonding, if the defendant does not pay the surety amount, the surety has to pay the principal plus interest. The defendant has chances of escaping from the trail. From the above review, one can analyze that bail bond is a written agreement that helps the defendant to release from custody. It ensures that all payment and material will be properly furnished. Bail bonding has its own merits and demerits. Some time the defendant fails to pay the amount, the surety has to pay the principal plus interest. Ramesh Khan is a SEO copywriter for Bail Bond . He written many articles in various topics. Depression: Based on a True Story

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Jamie Herold Ring, ring. The crisis operator answers the phone to a woman pleading to let her daughter know that she loves her. The woman spent her day writing letters to friends and loved ones, expressing her thoughts and emotions. From the loaded gun on the table to the rope hanging from the attic, it was a well-thought out plan (Lewis, Pamela, 2003). Have you ever felt life was not worth living? Have you wished you were dead? Have you had any thoughts of taking your own life? It began October of 1998, while my husband and I were on our way home from the grocery store. The cellular phone rings. My husband answers. He then tells the caller that we are on our way there. His tone of voice sounded frightened and worried. I repeatedly asked, What is going on? Why are you driving so fast? Something has happened to your mother!, he exclaimed. I had fifteen minutes to prepare myself for the worst, yet I did not know exactly what I was preparing for. As we arrived to the scene, numerous police vehicles, two ambulances, the local rescue squad, private investigators, negotiators, and the SWAT team had one half of a mile from my house blocked off. As we came to a stop, I jumped out of the car crying and screaming, while trying to find answers as to what has happened. A police officer then pulled me aside. The young man explained that my mother was attempting suicide due to her depression. As the number one public health problem, four to 8 percent of the U.S. population experience or have experienced a clinical depressed syndrome (Klerman, Gerald, pg. 27). Depression is a mental illness that requires immediate medical attention. Because depression is so widespread, it is often called the common cold (Koop, Everett, 1996). The difference between a cold and depression is that depression, if not treated, can lead to the death of an individual. Depression occurs when nerve cells, or neurons, fail to communicate with each other due to a chemical imbalance in the brain (Koop, Everett, 1996). A neuron is a specialized cell that conducts messages through the nervous system. Two neurons communicate with each other by electrical impulses or signals. The point of communication where electrical signals carry a message between two neurons is called a synapse. Separating the sending neurons and receiving neurons from the axon terminal are tiny, fluid-filled gaps called synaptic clefts. Chemicals called neurotransmitters dock at receptor sites, thus igniting the electrical signal of that neuron. After the signal is delivered, the neurotransmitters float back to the neuron that sent them. This process is called reputake. Researchers have found many causes or reasons for depression. Usually, depression is caused by a deficiency in the neurotransmitter serotonin or norepinephrine (Morgan, Marie, pg. 75). Serotonin helps regulate mood, sleep, aggression, and appetite. Norepinephrine affects wakefulness, alertness, and also appetite. In some cases hereditary, personality traits, stress, and lack of supportive relationships are linked to depression. Other causes for depression are helplessness, sense of loss, isolation, and unresolved anger (Koop, Everett, 1996). Through your eyes, you see the world as a series of positive, neutral, or negative events. These events are interrupted through a group of thoughts that constantly flow through your mind. This is called your internal dialogue. Created by your thoughts is your feelings or mood. Before an emotional response can be experienced what you are feeling or what is happening to you (Burns, David, pg. 30). Therefore, the negative thoughts that process through your mind are actually the cause of your emotions. Your negative thoughts, or cognitions, are the most overlooked symptoms of depression. Symptoms are feelings or behaviors that disturb normal functioning (Heitler, Susan, pg.47). A depressed person may show signs, such as a loss of pleasure or interest in usual activities, feelings of worthlessness, guilt, decrease in the ability to think or concentrate, and a loss of energy and appetite (Koop, Everett, 1996). The assessments of symptoms include specifying troubled behaviors and feelings, the history of the symptoms and diagnosing the problem (Heitler, Susan, pg. 49). Other symptoms include crying excessively, negative thoughts about the future and even thoughts of death or suicide (Koop, Everett, 1996). Suicide is the deliberate taking of ones own life, which accounts for 5 percent of clinically depressed patients (Burns, David, pg. 383). Suicide rates have increased in children and adolescents since the 1990’s (Burns, David, pg. 9). Why do depressed individuals often think of suicide? Persuasive and pessimistic visions dominate their thoughts. To them, life seems to be a nightmare. When a depressed person thinks of the past, she only remembers moments of suffering and pain (Burns, David, pg. 384). Researchers have proven that the unrealistic sense of hopelessness is one of the most important factors in the plans for a serious suicidal wish or thought (Burns, David, pg. 385). A famous myth remains today: An unsuccessful suicide attempt is simply a means of getting attention and is not to be taken seriously (Burns, David, pg. 387). The fact is that all attempts are to be taken very seriously. Because a depressed individuals pain and suffering may feel unbearable and never ending, she may conclude that suicide is the only escape. In reality, medical treatment and attention will help the individual overcome depression. Many researchers have described therapy as an opportunity for people to deal with their conflict of everyday living (Heitler, Susan, pg. 7). Consulting with a professional, such as a psychologist or a psychiatrist, can be a nice beginning for treatment. With a Ph.D. in psychology and other related fields, a psychologist serves the public through research, testing, and psychotherapy (Hauck, Paul, pg. 134). Psychotherapy is an important means of treatment for certain types of emotional or mental disorders. Usually working with the patient alone, a psychologist allows her to express feelings and emotions of lifes battles. At the end of each session, the psychologist gives simple, step by step advice to the patient. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in counseling clients with psychiatric, neurologic, and medical conditions (Reference International Publishers, LTD, pg. 18). During a period of one to six visits, the doctor will be discussed with the patient and followed upon regularly (Reference International Publishers, LTD, pg. 187). A psychiatrist also prescribes and administers medication, usually antidepressants, with the referral from a psychologist (Hauck, Paul, pg.135). Antidepressants are drugs that are prescribed to treat depression and some anxiety disorders. The most widely prescribed drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, enhance the potency of the brains neurotransmitters in the synapse. Some agents of tricyclic drugs are Imipramine, Desipramine, Amitriptyline, Nortriptyline, Protriptyline, and Doxepin (Burns, David, pgs. 430-432). Side effects, such as dry mouth, constipation and blurred vision, disappear after the first few days (Burns, David, pg. 432). MAO inhibitors cause elevations in the levels of amine neurotransmitters, thus, correcting the chemical imbalance in the brain. The most commonly prescribed trade names for MAO inhibitors are Marplan, Nardil, and Parnate. Similar to tricyclic drugs, the side effects of MAO inhibitors are dry mouth, lightheadedness, trouble urinating, a rash, and constipation or loose stools (Burns, David, pg. 440). MAO inhibitors, if not taken properly can produce serious effects. Blood pressure may rise of certain foods or drugs containing a substance called tyramine, which interferes with the brains ability to regulate blood pressure, while taking a MAO inhibitor (Burns, David, pg. 441). Lithium carbonate is another antidepressant drug used to treat severe depression. Although lithium is simply salt, it does have many side effects, such as hand tremors, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, that usually taper off within a week or soon after (Morgan, Marie, pg. 78). Long term effects of lithium include blackouts, headache, slurred speech, weight changes, fatigue, and hypotension (Morgan, Marie, pg. 70). Valium is an antidepressant that suppresses anxiety and covers up symptoms rather than getting at the causes (Morgan, Marie, pg. 78). Although addictive and may worsen depression, some doctors use minor tranquilizers or sedatives to treat anxiety and nervousness (Burns, David, pg. 444). Sleeping pills are used to help treat insomnia. These pills become highly addictive as they disrupt normal sleep patterns and greatly worsen the sleeping problem. For example, my mother was given the drug, Ambien, because she was having trouble falling and staying asleep. She awoke often only to take another pill because she was still not able to sleep well. Ambien gave her short-term amnesia and disrupted her sleep instead of helping her sleep. She ended up in the emergency room for an accidental overdose (Lewis, Pamela, 2003). I almost lost her again to a drug that was supposed to help her. There are at least a dozen different antidepressants that are effective for some patients, while for others, the results may be disappointing or harmful. Reoccurrences of depression can happen at any time a person stops taking medication as prescribed just because they think they are better. In some cases a depressed person may need an increase or even a change in medication after an evaluation with a doctor or therapist. In the near future, researchers will hopefully advance the understanding of antidepressant drugs and how they affect the human brain. It sometimes, seems that the more hopeless and severe the depression was, the more extraordinary and delicious the taste of happiness and self-esteem is. As you begin to feel better, the pessimistic thoughts will go away like the melting of the winter snow when spring arrives. You may even wonder how you ever could believe such thought in the first place. Because the change of negative to more neutral or positive thinking can be so dramatic, a person may be convinced that the depression has vanished forever. But that simply is not true because there is a mood disorder that remains. A depressed person who feels better must understand what caused the depression and be able to apply and reapply self-help techniques whenever needed. Acquiring self-confidence and self-esteem is a must to getting better. Focusing on happy memories and keeping positive thoughts will decrease the recurrence of depression. Lowering ones standards to prevent disappointment and learning from ones own mistakes will also help a person overcome depression. My mother has beat the battle of depression after six months in Zellar, the old local mental institution, and years of learning how to cope with lifes emotional stress. Trying to resume her original lifestyle was the most difficult obstacle to getting better. Her suicidal attempt was reported on the front page of the Peoria Journal Star. Not only did they have the wrong information about the depressing event, they also labeled her and tried to press charges against her for trying to take her own life. Returning to work, she was stereotyped as crazy or insane instead of strong and hopeful for fighting the horrifying condition. It has been five years since her breakdown and she now lives a wonderful and happy life. She states, I am proud to be here today! (Lewis, Pamela, 2003). If you know anyone who shows any signs of depression or has thoughts of death, help them. Be their friend and give them positive reinforcement. Show them they are loved and needed in your life and many others. Most important, get them help because not every depressed person knows they are depressed, therefore they may not be able to help themselves. References: Burns, David D., MD.
