Food & Fitness Lessons From A Frenchman

By Rebekah N I was up in Charleston, SC last weekend - an absolutely charming city brimming with energy and life - visiting my friend Will. We kept busy from Friday thru Sunday, touring the town, finding good spots to eat, and reveling in the Southern city’s rich American history. One of the ways we did that was by taking a ferry tour out to Fort Sumter, the manmade fort where the first shot of the Civil War was fired. Will and I boarded the ferry, and I settled in to enjoy the sea breeze and listen to the corny recorded tour guide for the half hour boat ride. But it wasn’t long before something else caught my attention. Actually, it was some*one*. The dark-haired stranger with the brown Diesel-type shoes, the expensive worn-in jeans, the green wool-lined coat… and the aviator sunglasses. He was decidedly *not* a Southern boy, and I was struck by the suspicion that he was not American at all. Once we arrived at Fort Sumter, and the Chris Farley-esque tour guide gave his schpeel for fully half of the time we had to explore the amazing brick structure, at least 40% of my mindshare was occupied by this beautiful stranger. So, the tour ends. We get back on the boat for the half-hour ferry ride back. I wanted to talk to him, but I didn’t have the guts. But since I could have sworn that he was looking at me several times during the tour - even, perhaps, staring - I was encouraged that it wouldn’t be such a bad move after all. With about 10 minutes left to go on the boat ride, I gave myself a pep talk using all kinds of phrases like, “You only have one shot”, “What do you have to lose?” “If you don’t say something, you’ll regret it later” - etc. And it worked. I told Will there was a cute guy “up there” and I was gonna go talk to him. So I did. It turned out I was right - he wasn’t American. He’s from France, and his friend next to him from Ireland. They’re going to law school in North Carolina, and were visiting Charleston for the weekend. As we chatted, they said they were probably going to visit Savannah that night and leave the next day. Score. Since I live in Savannah, and I was also driving back that evening, I put out the “tour guide” bait - “If you guys want a tour guide…” They gladly took it. So, we had a dinner date that night. They got in late, so we ended up hanging out at a scrubby bar till 1 a.m. I’m not a bar person, but we ignored the strange drunks and the men with roaming hands dancing with inebriated women as much as possible… and… just planted ourselves at a table and enjoyed good conversation, so-so bar food - and yes, even some good (if deafening) music from the bar musician. We had such a good time, in fact, that I was invited back for an encore the next day. So we also hung out Monday, from morning till about 3 p.m. - at which time they wanted to get started on the long drive home with sufficient daylight left. So, that’s the long prelude to my eating tips today. And based on my experiences with these guys, here are your… Food & Fitness Lessons From a Frenchman 1. Eating crap is a diversion, not a lifestyle Gregoire, or Greg, wasn’t like American guys when it came to food. Sure, he ate his share of Burger King on the road, and went for the Confederate Sandwich at the bar - a fried-chicken-on-bread concoction that would make most fitness fanatics cringe. But it wasn’t a *lifestyle* - it was a diversion. That’s key. He talked about how if he kept eating like that every day, he would soon become “very big!” And while he doesn’t love eating vegetables, he eats them because they’re good for his health and for He had eaten too much fast food and drank too much that weekend, and he needed to “pure my blood”, he said. “Like detoxify?” I asked, “You know that word?” His face lit up. “Detoxify! Yes, exactly. I need to detoxify. Eat vegetables and drinks lots of water all week.” 2. Commercial areas filled with fast food restaurants are tacky, and not any place to spend a lot of your time Colm (pro: column), the Irish guy, related Greg’s reaction to Myrtle Beach, SC, whose streets are apparently lacking in landscaping and natural beauty, and are instead a concrete mass plastered with gas stations and fast food restaurants. He thought it was, basically, gross. Colm taught him the word “tacky” to describe the scene. A town dead to natural beauty, and replaced by gasoline-and-grease spewing joints on every street, is no place to spend your time. It’s tacky. 3. Restaurant and fast-food portion sizes are NOT single servings - so don’t eat them like they are When I boxed up half my cafe lunch to take home, Greg looked amused and said, “I have never seen anyone do that before.” In France, he said, if you asked a waiter to box something up, he’d probably look at you impatiently and say, “Did you bring a box?” You either eat what’s on your plate or leave it. In America, the portions are so supersized that it’s nearly impossible to eat what’s on your plate. In France, “portion distortion” isn’t rampant, so it’s actually possible to eat most or all of your meal - without getting sick or popping any buttons. 4. Walk. As. Much. As. Possible. Downtown Savannah is very pedestrian friendly, so on Monday we enjoyed walking up and down and all around as they absorbed the city’s sights and sounds. These boys weren’t afraid to walk. They’re used to it. And in fact, the non-walking American lifestyle has come as a shock to them in many ways. For example, take their experience of catching a cab Friday night in Charleston before heading to a bar. They wanted to eat something before arriving, so the cabbie brought them through a fast food drive thru, and they ate their meal in the car. This was obviously not uncommon, as a previous passenger had left his used cup in one of the cupholders - cupholders provided especially for riders. In France and Ireland, this is unheard of. Not only is eating in a cab a big no-no, but grabbing a meal on the go isn’t an option either - not on the cab driver’s time. The guys were happy to get out and walk around on a nice day like they’re used to doing back home. The European sacrifice of “convenience” is replaced by a much better reward: normal bodyweight and good cardiovascular health. — These are perhaps common sense lessons - but comparing the cultural quirks of the U.S., France, and Ireland as seen from the perspective of the countries’ offspring was a fun and fascinating experience. And more often than not, common sense is the most reliable, and most profound, kind of sense we can cultivate. And two final lessons from my fabulous weekend experience: 1. Foreign guys are coolest. 2. If you feel the urge to do something, but you’re scared to do it - DO IT ANYWAY. Avoid The 10 Worse Junk Foods In descending order, they are, fruit drinks (mostly sugar and water); white bread; doughnuts; decaffeinated coffee (caffeine is usually removed by a chemical cousin to paint solvent); soda; diet soda (usually sweetened by a headache, seizure, memory loss-causing toxin called aspartame); sugary cold breakfast cereal; deep dish pizza; ice cream; french fries (62% of people supersize their fries and waistlines at McDonalds) and potato chips. Sugar, not cocaine, clearly is the drug of choice in America, as we ingest an average of 140 to 160 pounds of sugar per person per year. How sweet it is. 4. Avoid Not Taking A Good Multi Daily The Levin Group in Falls Church, VA, a health policy study group, found that if every senior took a good multi-vitamin daily, we could save $1.6 billion in medical expenses over five years by reducing heart attacks, hospital stays, use of nursing homes, home health care, pneumonia and other infections.But why wait until you get older? 5. Avoid Internal Inflammations Leading To Disease Check the Fibrinogen and C-Reactive Protein levels in your blood. Steven Sinatra, M.D. says-as do many others-that abnormal cholesterol levels may not be the only heart disease culprit. Many heart attack patients have normal cholesterol levels. Dr. Sinatra believes that internal inflammations may lead to heart disease. C-Reactive Protein is a marker for inflammation. High levels of Fibrinogen are a marker for inappropriate internal blood clotting. Papain and bromelain reduce internal swelling. There are things to reduce Fibrinogen levels—other than prescription drugs. Sinatra names these controllable causes of internal inflammations–not enough Omega 3 oils; too many carbohydrates and unhealthy hydrogenated oils; toxins; vaccinations; obesity (fat cells secrete C-Reactive Protein); certain medications (including synthetic Hormone Replacement Therapy and birth control pills); viruses and infections (including herpes and gum disease, is now being linked to heart disease). 6. Dont Drink Unfiltered Water In Mexico Or In The USA, Either! There are about 6,500 municipal water systems on the USA. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that only 20% of these systems meet the minimum requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Water is sanitized with chlorine or chloramine (blend of chlorine and ammonia). Apparently, Pinellas County Florida water system thinks chloramine is good for humans, but it is lethal to goldfish. They produced a goldfish protection brochure sharing this wisdom with us. Though there are 35,000 pesticides, municipal water systems must only deal with six of them by law. Pesticides can cause birth defects, nerve damage, sterility and cancer. Author Gary Null, Ph.D., says that our water also contains parasites and toxic minerals, including aluminium, mercury and cadmium. To this list, the author adds hormones, antibiotics, and prescription drug residues. Think only the water is bad? Well, the EPA reports that 6 trillion pounds of chemicals are released into the environment each year, which work their way into our air, food and water. Are these problems, as DuPont used to say decades ago, better things for better living through chemistry? In some cases, treated water contains chloroform (which alters cholesterol metabolism and can increase the risk of liver cancer) and MX, an acidic derivative of chlorine (which increases the risk of bladder and rectal cancer). 7. Avoid Sedentary Living-You Must Exercise Did you know that the United States ranks 24th in health and longevity among 191 nations? Japan ranks number 1. Its people are thinner than Americans, and they eat lots of fish, a source of omega oils. And consider the Amish in Ontario. A study finds that only 4% of them are obese. They eat meats, gravies and sugary desserts and tons of calories, but they are old-fashioned, hardworking farmers. Although the USA is 24th in health and longevity, we spend more per person, $3,274, than any other country each year on sickness industry health care. Americas unhealthy condition is the result of an epidemic of obesity, poor diet, failure to exercise, toxicity of our home and work environments, and the overuse of prescription drugs and unneeded surgeries. The National Center for Disease Control finds that 65.9% of obese people are trying to lose weight, but only 9.1% of them do regular, intensive exercise. Among people of normal weight, though, 20.7% are trying to lose weight (why?) and 16.8% do regular and intensive exercise. Whats wrong with this picture? The author exercises five days per week-one hour three times per week on aerobic equipment (ellipticals and treadmills). He weight trains for one hour two days per week and does lots of stretching. 8. Avoid DietsDiets Are A Four Letter Word Diets do not work long term. By Royane Real Have you been trying hard to make friends with no good results to show for all of your efforts? If it seems that you have been trying hard to make friends, but that other people still don’t want to be your friend, you may have come to the conclusion that there’s something wrong with you. That maybe you are basically unlikeable. Many of us go through such torment of self doubt, especially during our teenage years, when teens are often the victims of vicious bullying from their peers for no reason at all. If you feel as if the people you are trying to befriend dont like you, the first thing you must do is to ask yourself: Do you have any real evidence that others don’t like you? Or are you just imagining the worst because you are always very harsh with yourself? People who have low self-esteem, or who are suffering from depression, are often convinced that others don’t like them, even when there is no evidence for their negative belief. People who have a poor self image can be surrounded by others who like them, care about them, and enjoy their company; yet because these people don’t believe they are worthy of being liked, they are convinced that no one else likes them either. So, if you are feeling as if nobody likes you, try to find out if there is some real evidence that others don’t like you, or whether you are just being very negative in your opinion of yourself. On the other hand, there are times when it’s not just your imagination that others dont like you. It might be really true that most of the people you meet are consistently rejecting you, even when you make social overtures and try to be as friendly to them as possible. There are many reasons this can happen. You may have moved to a society where the people are very tight knit with each other, and they don’t open up to newcomers easily. You might be surrounded by people who automatically dislike people of your particular religion, ethnic background, sexual orientation, skin color, or bodily appearance. You may be surrounded by people who reject you because the clothes you wear are not the latest and most expensive fashion. In high school years in particular, many teens are strongly conformist, and can be very cruel to those who seem to be different from the norm. Sadly, some people never grow out of the stage of judging others for trivial and superficial reasons. If you are really are being rejected by others, it is important that you dont make the situation worse by attacking yourself. This will only make you feel worse, and will make you lose confidence in approaching new people in the future. Saying negative things to yourself could start you on a downward spiral of self-doubt and self-hatred. Or you might turn your anger outwards in a spirit of bitterness and revenge towards other people. This is not a solution that will win you friends or peace of mind. It’s also important to take a good, hard look at yourself and the way that you interact with other people. There may be specific behaviors that are causing others to dislike you, and these are behaviors which you can change. Ask yourself the questions on this checklist. If it looks as if any of these behaviors are a problem for you, it’s very likely that if you change this behavior, that other people will like you better. 1. Are you always very negative and complaining all the time? Most people find this habit very annoying. 2. Do you actively participate in conversations with others? Or do you hold back and let other people do all the work in making conversation. If so, learn to improve your conversational skills so that talking with you is an experience that others look forward to. 3. Do you endlessly talk about yourself and show little interest in the people you are talking with? Other people will become bored with you very quickly if you seem only interested in yourself. 4. Do you try too hard to please others, always agreeing with everything that they say, and never having any opinions of your own? People won’t respect you if you don’t respect yourself. 5. Do you often say things that hurt the feelings of others and then say it was just a joke? Do you say mean things behind other people’s backs? No one will trust you if they think that you are basically an unkind person. If you want to make other people your friends, it’s very important that you don’t give up. Keep approaching people, keep trying to make conversation. Get rid of your bad social habits if they are getting in the way of friendship. If you are being given the cold shoulder by many of the people you encounter, particularly in your school or workplace, keep looking elsewhere for people you can confide in and befriend. You can try in your church, in your community, and in your own family. Work on developing the talents and good qualities within yourself so that you can appeal in a new way to other people with whom you will have more in common. When you manage to catch him/her on his/her cell, there is an awkward exchanges and he/she ends the brief exchange with the excuse that he/she is too busy/ exhausted to talk or is currently an emotional wreck or is dealing with some career/business challenges and promises to call or visit later. And he/she doesnt. Your immediate reaction when you sense the other person is pulling away is to attempt a control strategy. A part of you tells you his/her behaviour is a flashing exit sign but uh-uhm, you somehow find a logical reason to justify his/her behaviour (”emotional residue” from an ex, growing up with an alcoholic mother or absent father etc.). You tell yourself that what he/she needs is your devotion, love and attention. So you send him/her emails urging him/her to hang in there, indulging, advising or affirming him/her. You constantly prod him/her for information even become aggressively obsessed with wanting to know what has caused him/her to distance.
