Her Price is Beyond Pearls

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Shael Siegel Shabbat observance for an orthodox Jewish family in the 1960s was very different than that of the orthodox Jewish family of the 21st century. For the most part the “eruv” (symbolic fence for carrying personal items on the sabbath) was practically non existent unless it was constructed for personal use, in ones personal domain. Boys did not play basketball on the driveway hoop (it was not appropriate) unless you went away for a weekend (to the mountains or resort), nor did orthodox Jews own canines as pets because they were considered mooktza (forbidden to handle) on Shabbat. Another noticeably absent feature of Jewish domestic life in those years was the liturgical rendition of Eshet Chayil (Woman of Valor), which today is conspicuously integrated into the Friday night Shabbat ritual prior to Kiddush (blessing over the sacramental wine). In the 1960s the Friday night ritual was composed of singing shalom aleichem, Kiddush, dinner, with zemirot (optional), birkat hamazon, and a race for the newspaper. Jewish family life in the 1960s was more harmonious, less divorce and more tranquility. My mother did not have a manicure or have her hair coiffed prior to the onset of the sabbath. Even though my father did not publicly declare his love and admiration for my mother through chanting “Eshet Chayil,” it was apparent from their relationship that mutual respect, love and admiration were the conspicuous ingredients of their marriage. My children, however, experienced a different Shabbat, its flavor altered to conform to the affluent suburban, Jewish community of the 21st century. Taking a Shabbat walk in our neighborhood one would notice many orthodox Jews walking their dogs as well as teenage boys playing basketball in their driveways. On Friday night there is the conspicuous addition to the ritual of chanting “Eshet Chayil,” renditions of which are becoming more flamboyant. Interestingly and ironically, there is an inverse ratio at play. In the 1960s when orthodox Jewish divorce was practically non existent “Eshet Chayil” was not part of the Friday night Shabbat ritual. As the divorce rate has gone up, so coincidentally, has the amount of men chanting “Eshet Chayil” in praise of their wives. I do not mean to suggest that a correlation exists between the increased frequency and trendiness of chanting “Eshet Chayil” and the rising divorce rate among orthodox Jews. “Eshet Chayil” has become the sine qua non of publicly proclaiming ones love and commitment to their spouse. At weddings, it has become fashionable for the groom to go down on his knee in front of his bride and in the presence of hundreds of guests publicly chant the “Eshet Chayil.” There seems to be an association between love of ones spouse and reciting the chapter from the Book of Proverbs. My children expressed concern that since I did not sing “Eshet Chayil” might there be a problem with our relationship. Having explained to them that our relationship was as solid as the foundation stones of the Kotel (Temple mount wall) I went on to explain my reservations about chanting “Eshet Chayil.” “Eshet Chayil” follows the tradition and is consistent with the underpinnings of the marriage contract in Jewish law. According to Jewish law, the man marries the woman, and it is the man who can grant the Get (divorce). This is so because in Jewish law the contractual language of the transaction positions the man as the initiator of the transaction. He is the active member of the transaction and she is the passive member, accepting the ring and the Ketubah (marriage contract). In the TB Tractate Kiddushin, the Mishnah begins with the language of the transaction Haisha Nikneit.. the emphasis is on the verb Kannah. In the Mishnah that we are referring to, the root Kannah appears in the passive form. She is bought. He does the buying. No matter how one views it in the final analysis, the man initiates the transaction. He has acquired her in one of three ways as the Mishnah stipulates. According to Jewish law there cannot be a double ring ceremony. The bride is not an equal partner in the transaction. She is being acquired, he is doing the acquiring. This brings us back to the subject of “Eshet Chayil.” Now that he has acquired her, he does a weekly assessment of his investment as is expressed in Chapter thirty one of the Book of Proverbs. By the husband chanting the words of “Eshet Chayil,” he is confirming that indeed he made a good transaction. By affirming his acquisition, is there the inevitable and subconscious level of comparison being made with others making similar deals? Let us also not forget that the text was written at a time when polygamy was very much a part of our culture. In saying these words is he comparing his acquisition to others that he has made or is he comparing his acquisition to those made by friends and associates? The man is in the market place, as a business person, reviewing his investments, checking the market to determine the value of his performance. The text of “Eshet Chayil” provides us with a check list of her performance in terms of whether or not this was indeed a sound investment. Examples abound. For instance, verse 16 she contemplates a field and purchases it; or verse 17 she girds her loin with vigor and strengthens her arms; or verse 21 she fears not for her household for snow, for all her household are dressed in crimson. While she is working the fields and makes sure that everyone has warm clothing, he, her husband is known in the gates, when he sits with the elders of the land (verse 23).” There are commentaries that claim that the text should not be perceived in the simple format as I have presented it but understood as a metaphor. She, being Israel or she, being the Torah. Regardless of the commentary, the fact is that the text has been adopted as a song to be sung to the wife of the household on Friday evening. It is not sung in the synagogue in praise of Torah, nor is it sung in praise of Israel. Jewish mothers have always worked hard and it is to their credit that their progeny are successful. They have devoted their lives to their children, and it would seem more appropriate for the children to chant the “Eshet Chayil” to their loving mothers while the husband quietly sits back and contemplates his returns on his investment. Can You Call Yourself a True Lover?

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By James Sniechowski Ask yourself: Have you earned the privilege of being in a truly loving and romantic relationship? Have you given yourself to the process of co-creating success? For when we don’t succeed we are in some way responsible. Oh no, you say, it was his fault or her problems that wrecked everything. But each of us chooses to be where we are. Our relationships start at the very first moment of meeting and are shaped by both people each step along the way. When you focus outside yourself for the source of the problem–what the other person is doing or not doing–you abdicate responsibility for how you have chosen to live. How often do you find yourself being judgmental about the different ways of your partner? Perhaps even feeling righteous about it. After all, it’s annoying when he leaves his clothes all around, when she’s on the phone forever. If we’re honest, we see that we are quite judgmental toward those we say we love. Why is so easy? Because we’re about as harsh on them as we are on ourselves. Yet it’s comfortable to ignore our own self-condemnation and believe that we’re innocent. It’s all the other person’s fault. But the way we see the other is simply the outer manifestation of how we see our selves–that is denied. Oh, not in this specific behavior or that. But in the attitude toward our limitations, mistakes and vulnerable humanity. Then we are devastated when our relationships don’t work out. Yet our approach has been to try to get the other to change and avoid our own self-development. We fail to move beyond self-centered demands into the true meaning of love and acceptance. So love never really has a chance. How do we become true lovers? It’s simple, really. We need to face into the fact that each of us, yes, each and every one of us has security issues. We deal with our insecurity in different ways. But we are always looking to find assurance that we are lovable, that we are loved for who we really are. Start by changing how you relate to yourself. Notice the angry and harsh voice in you head that wants to condemn you for any little slip-up, any problem you should have been too perfect to have encountered. And then release the need to judge yourself. You are human, after all. Now replace the contempt and condemnation with compassion and self-acceptance. Yes, you’re not perfect. No one is. And nothing tragic occurred. In fact, each mistake is a gift, a chance to develop yourself as a true lover–first for yourself. And then for others. You become a successful lover from the inside out. For it is true, how we see the world outside, that’s who we are inside. Judith Sherven and James Sniechowski share the secret of life-long romance. Traditional Anniversary Gifts

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Ross Bainbridge Anniversaries are celebrated by gifts that are made of different materials for each year that a couple has spent together. The first year is a gift of paper, and each year after that, the gifts become more and more valuable as is the couples time spent together. Two milestone anniversary celebrations are the 25th and 50th. The 25th is celebrated with silver, and the 50th is celebrated with gold. It is said that this tradition originated in medieval Europe when wives were given a silver wreath to celebrate their 25th years of marriage and a gold wreath for 50. Sixty years together (if anyone is so lucky) is celebrated with diamonds that is said to be a tradition passed on by Queen Victoria when she celebrated her Diamond Jubilee after sixty years on the British throne. No matter how many years a couple has been together there are many all time favorite traditional gifts that are given including flowers, jewelry, gift certificates and frames. If you are a stickler for tradition but are on a tight budget, use the yearly theme to wrap your gift in. For example, use silver paper for a 25th anniversary gift. If youre stuck for ideas, there are plenty of websites that have anniversary gift ideas and articles that give you loads of information on what is traditional and modern in the way of gifts for yearly anniversaries. There are also many fabulous websites that sell custom-made anniversary gifts and cards. You can also check your local yellow pages for specialty shops that feature anniversary gifts and party supplies. Anniversary Gifts provides detailed information on Anniversary Gifts, Wedding Anniversary Gifts, First Wedding Anniversary Gifts, 25Th Wedding Anniversary Gifts and more. If the Fish Do Not Bite

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Stephanie Manley If the fish do not bite, move to more fertile waters. Often we see someone that we find attractive, and while we put on the best face we can, they are uninterested. If someone is truly interested in you, they will make that known. You will not need to continue to place yourself on audition for the, and get no results, if someone is interested they will show it. If that person that you have you eye on isnt taking the bait, move to where someone is. Call it irony, call it Gods good blessing, that everyone isnt attracted to everyone else. There will always be not so great choices, and some wonderful choices out there. Is it by design that not everyone attracts you in a romantic way, or is it just a good thing. With this in mind, you shouldnt get discouraged when that other person isnt interested enough in you to pursue a relationship. So if you are extending out invitations, your phone calls arent being returned, and the person isnt open to spending time with you because they are too busy, let it go. If you call people to dinner they come, and if they dont, guess what, they arent hungry. You need to cut these outpourings within a reasonable time before people become uncomfortable. It isnt about being antisocial; it is about you not wasting your time. If people are interested, they return phone calls. They do show up when you invite them, and they do make an effort to spend time with you. Watch for these signs. Yes, some people are off to slow starts, and thats ok; just make sure youre getting positive feedback. If you are getting lukewarm feedback, it is time for you to rethink your position on this particular person, and see if it is a slow start, or if it is simply time to move on. One thing to remember when you are looking for a potential partner is that you are getting positive feedback. This is in returned phone calls, they show up when you invite them, and they are willing to do their share in keeping lines of communication open. If they are doing less than that, that person isnt as interested in you as you are in them. So before you get a lot invested into a lukewarm relationship, simply look elsewhere for that special person. Aloe Vera - No Wonder They Call It The ‘Miracle Plant’

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By Kay Blackiston Aloe Vera is a member of the Lily family. It is a succulent that looks a lot like a cactus and is known by various names such as the burnt plant, the miracle plant, the natural healer and the medicine plant. Although there are more than two hundred species of Aloe Vera, only a few have medicinal properties, and of these Aloe Vera Barbadensis is the most beneficial. The Aloe Vera plant reaches maturity at about four years of age. The outer leaf is smooth and rubbery and inside is the gel and sap which is harvested, preserved and bottled to give either a juice or when combined with other ingredients creams, lotions and gels. About 96% of the plant is water. The rest is made up of minerals such as magnesium, zinc, copper, chromium and the antioxidant selenium, vitamins including the antioxidants C, E and beta carotene, 20 of the 22 amino acids required by the body including 7 of the 8 that cannot be manufactured by the body, sugars, enzymes and fatty acids. The combination of these elements has a more powerful effect together than they would individually. This is because each enhances the effect of the other, an occurrence that is known as synergism. Aloe Vera works in two different areas; by promoting healing or preventing injury to the epithelial tissues (the skin, the lining of the gut, the bronchial tubes, etc) and by balancing the immune system when its antioxidants fight the free radicals produced by our metabolism and pollutants in the environment. When taken internally, Aloe Vera is soothing to digestive tract irritations, such as colitis and peptic ulcers. The anti-inflammatory fatty acids are also helpful for the stomach, small intestine and colon. It alkalises the digestive juices preventing overacidity a common cause of indigestion. Amongst many other ailments that have been helped by Aloe Vera are diverticulitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, constipation and haemorrhoids. Conditions that are improved by balancing the immune system are arthritis, asthma, ME (post viral fatigue syndrome) and LE (lupus). When applied to the skin Aloe Vera improves a large variety of skin complaints such as eczema, psoriasis, ulcers, burns, stings, acne, bites, scrapes, abrasions, scalp care, sore muscles, cold sores, bruises, sprains and frostbite to name but a few! More recent studies show Aloe Vera can help prolong survival time and stimulate the immune system of cancer patients. This is partly by fighting free radicals with its antioxidant properties and also by stimulating the white blood cells causing the release of immune-activating and anticancer substances such as interferons, interleukins and tumour necrosis factor. These properties of Aloe Vera have also made it an effective part of a nutrition support program for HIV patients; leading to fewer occurrences of infections such as thrush, fatigue and diarrhoea and an increase in the number of white blood cells meaning a boost to their immune system. Living On One Income

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Martin Lukac It seems as if every family today is a two income family. It can be difficult to live on one income today. Housing cost in many metro areas are simply outrageous. The cost of living in many places is sky high. Can you be a one income family. Yes. One third of all households are led by single parents. Some statistics seem to say that nearly one-half of all women stay at home. That means that a lot of us are making it on one income. So it definitely is possible. Many couples begin to realize that having both spouses work doesn’t really add up to that much extra. Jonni McCoy’s book, Miserly Moms, says that it can cost $9 to %15 an hour to pay for work related expenses. So if you aren’t making more than that, it could cost the second spouse to work. For example, we realized that not only were we paying the maintenance, gas and repairs on a vehicle that was logging many, many miles for me to commute to work, my income was boosting us into the next tax bracket. When we looked at having children, the day care expenses finished wiping out the income I was bringing in working outside of the home. A lot of my friends are in the same situation. But the step to living on one income is not an easy one. We had always planned for me to be a stay-at-home mom, so we tried not to depend on my income at all. That was impossible. It took us paying down our debt and taking steps to live more frugally for me to be able to stay at home. You will probably need to make changes as well. It is really hard to adjust to one income. You may have to cut out some extra things to make it work. But once you start cutting things out and changing your spending habits, you will begin to see more areas that can be limited without hurting your sense of having what you need. Over time, you simply begin to look at things differently. You don’t have to have children to stay at home. We are conditioned that everyone has to work outside of the home to be a worthy person. We tend to look at those who don’t need to work as spoiled. But that isn’t the case. Many people work hard to run a household, especially when there is less money coming in. What are some things you can do to prepare yourself for one income? 1. Start with cutting down your debt. Credit cards have to go. They are way too tempting to have around when you are trying to cut back on spending. Cutting your debt is the easiest way to find extra money in your budget. It will take a while, but is worth it. 2. Look at what is necessary. For example, do you really need to pay a water service for a water softener when they are relatively cheap through a home improvement store. For less than one year’s rental on a softener unit, you can purchase one and cut the rental from your monthly bills. 3. Be frugal in your decisions. This is a habit that takes time to form. The key is to focus on your goal. You are looking to keep your household running smoothly without having to go to work. Work with your partner to make a list of financial priorities. Make plans for the future. 4. Take on extra work. If you are highly skilled, you will probably be able to find some way to add to the family income while staying at home. Whether it is crafts that you sell locally, babysitting or catering, you can do things that you enjoy and make a little extra money for the budget The key is to not become dependable on the income you are bringing in. 5. Have an emergency fund. When only one person works, if they are injured or have an accident, chances are that nothing will be coming in. If you are a stay at home mom and become ill or hurt, you will need to have someone watch your children. An emergency fund helps cushion your budget from emergencies. You should have at least three months worth of expenses in an emergency fund. That way, when things go wrong, your budget doesn’t suffer. If the Bible Says It, I Believe It, That Does It For Me - With Permission, Animals Can Talk!

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Dennis Diehl You gotta admit, the Bible has some great stories in it. As a child I thought a lot about these stories wondering how they could happen, but since it was the Bible and written by God himself over a long weekend, I never thought they might not have happened. From a talking snake in the Garden of Eden, to a guy named Jonah who spent three days and three nights in the belly of a great fish, whew…it was all very cool stuff. I always pictured Jonah sitting in the fish’s stomach on a three legged stool swallowed earlier in the day, around a small fire that he built to sit around and think of just how he got into this mess. I loved imagining how it must have felt to get puked up on the shore, but never wondered how the whale got close enough to get him on the beach. I guess it was projectile vomiting or something like that on the part of the fish. You know, kinda like the guy shot out of a cannon. Anyway, great story and it was a reminder to me that if you are ever on a cruise, don’t piss off the crew, but was taught that it was a story about Jesus being in the tomb. Theologians call it the “Sign of Jonah,” which is either this story or the fact that Ninevah repented, depending on which Gospel you read. Too bad Jonah isn’t around today to make another trip to Iraq. He seems to have had a knack at getting people to change their evil ways. Ninevah. after all, is just across the river from Mosul in Iraq. Anyway, I always loved the talking animal stories. As a kid I would stare at my dog and ask him, when no one was looking of course, if he could talk and just choose not to? We had a lot of those stare downs where I was pretty sure that he could talk but was mocking me with his silence. I felt that when I turned my back on him, he stuck his tongue out at me and smiled like a human, just for a moment. If he had walked away, I might not have felt that way, but when I looked at him, he looked back and stared at me as long as I stared at him. I knew he was thinking about whether or not to spring a well formulated sentence on me and then never do it again, just so I would know he could. Be he held onto his secret throughout his entire life. But still I knew he could talk if he wanted to. Animals talked in the Bible after all so it can’t be a unique thing, just a less chosen option. Here is a great story that I thought was really really true. It’s about the false prophet, Balaam who was told to curse Israelites in their desert wanderings, but always ended up blessing them, or something like that. He went on to become a symbol of all that was evil in other parts of the book. But Balaam at least knew what I knew. Animals can talk and it is not something anyone should ever doubt. Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab. But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the LORD stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, she turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat her to get her back on the road. So here it is obvious that donkeys can pick up on the vibrational frequencies that Angels of the Lord wiggle at, but humans can’t. How cool is that! This explains to me why my cat can be calm one minute and then running all over the apartment looking up and down and then running to another place checking out the wall. That cat is seeing Angels of the Lord in my apartment and I am just thinking the cat is nuts. Also, the donkey was only doing what a donkey does well…preserving itself. As noted in Wikepedia. “Donkeys have a reputation for stubbornness, but this is due to some handlers’ misinterpretation of their highly-developed sense of self preservation. It is difficult to force or frighten a donkey into doing something it sees as contrary to its own best interest, as opposed to horses who are much more willing to, for example, go along a path with unsafe footing.” So we know the Donkey saw something. No doubt the Angel of the Lord! :) Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow path between two vineyards, with walls on both sides. When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat her again. The Angel of the Lord must have been guarding like one would see in a basketball game. Sword and hands all over the place to keep that poor donkey terrified and in a position now to bash ‘ol Balaam foot and get bashed herself again as well. I say don’t ever bash a donkey, and certainly not a female one. Maybe it’s only the female one’s that can talk and will if you push them. Mr. Ed could talk and I believe he was male, so we can assume that being closely related to the donkey, male donkies could also talk. Then the angel of the LORD moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat her with his staff. This is going from bad to worse for sure and for the third and final time, this extra vibrational sensitive donkey gets a good bashing and then the camel dung hits the fan. “Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and she said to Balaam, Hey! poop for brains!” No just kidding, but this must have been my problem with my dog. The Lord had to open Buffy’s mouth to speak to me and I know he wanted to, but wasn’t getting permission from the Lord to do so, so at least we have cleared that childhood disappointment of mine up. The dog was not himself messing with me. He just had not permisison to speak. And she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.” The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” “No,” he said. Well there you have it. A talking donkey was no biggie to Balaam. He never seems to miss a beat when she starts having a chat with him about these bashings. I don’t know about you, but had my Cocker Spaniel really said anything to me, I would have run yelping and screaming into the house and never gone near that dog again! Well maybe later I would have gone back to ask, what did you say, but it would have be really scary waiting for another answer. Balaam just has a great conversation with the animal as if they had talked a few hours ago over breakfast. Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown. The angel of the LORD asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? Oh well, because she wouldn’t move, bashed my foot against a stone wall and then collapsed. All I really was looking for was an easy ride on this really nice road, Balaam may have thought to himself. However, once your eyes are opened to that extra dimensional vibrational Angel of the Lord frequency, it is best to just say, Sorry. I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me. The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now, but I would have spared her.” Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “I have sinned. I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.” Numbers 22:21-35 (NIV) Well at least that explains this whole thing, Balaam might have been thinking but was wise not to say, although high frequency, extra dimentional Angel’s of the Lord know what you’re thinking too, so you can’t win. Evidently the only thing that saved Balaam from a good beheading was that the donkey could see the Angel. Now it doesn’t say that the Angel opened the eyes of the donkey, so we can assume that at least all donkies and probably all animals can see these things as a matter of fact and can talk. Sure explains a lot about cats. So Balaam is stuck between his talking donkey and a threatening Angel. There is nothing left to do but repent, which he does nicely. He does mention, much like we might to a police officer after being run into, that if he had seen the Angel coming too, he would have been more careful and respectful. So I personaly think if you don’t see the Angel and neither of your two servants see it, you are somewhat off the hook for the moment. As a minister we always kidded about how God could only get to Balaam by talking to him through his ass…Balaam’s not God’s…never mind. Well what’s the point? The point is that animals can talk…doi. The Bible tells me so. They just need permission. We can be assurred that when cat’s meow, dogs bark, snakes sssssssssssssssssss and donkeys bray, they are teasing us and playing with our sensibilities. I’m going to go and stare my cat right in the eyes now until he cracks and confesses that he has been able to talk all along. And when he asks, So, how did you finally catch on? I never really ever let on to you that I could talk. I will be able to say that the Bible betrayed him and all his friends, and things around the apartment will never quite be the same again. Bad credit personal loan: Better solution without aggravation

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=John_Carry]John Carry Bad credit personal loan is a tailor made loan solution to give financial aid to all those afflicting from a bad credit history. Although, a bad credit history does pose problems in the procurement of any sort of loan, but a bad credit personal loan is a well-suited loan solution to deal with such situations. In the present lending market, a bad credit history has become quite a common thing. The current developments have been seen because of the substantial increase in the number of people with a bad credit history. Therefore, in the present scenario, loans seekers do not feel rejected or neglected by the lenders. In reality, lenders have also accepted bad credit as a common phenomenon among themselves. Thus, they do not hesitate to offer a bad credit personal loan to such people. A bad credit personal loan is not a sort of special loan, as borrowers can procure it for any purpose like any other loan option. The loan amount can be used for holidaying, for home renovation, to purchase a new car, on wedding expenses, to fund education, to pay off existing debts etc. A [http://www.go4ukloans.co.uk/badcreditpersonalloan.html target=_blank]bad credit personal loan is offered as secured bad credit personal loan and unsecured bad credit personal loan. If the borrower is looking forward to get a longer repayment period, a big loan amount, and flexible monthly instalments, then he can go for a secured bad credit personal loan. On the other hand, if the borrower is not capable to offer security, then he can opt for an unsecured bad credit personal loan. Non-involvement of security means that the lender would not allow a longer repayment period. Besides that, the lenders do charge a high rate of interest. Borrowers should get all the desired information about a bad credit personal loan before taking the final decision. Well, this information would give them a clear idea about this loan option. Moreover, this would help them to decide upon the right sort of bad credit personal loan as per their needs and financial capability. Having Your Sandwich and Eating It; a Business Students Guide to Securing a Placement

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Ashish Monga Many sandwich degree students can secure a placement through their universities dedicated placement office. However even with the universities support there is much onus on the student to actively secure a good quality placement and to stand out from crowd. The value of the Placements year The placement year is a very valuable experience, particularly if the student hasnt had much experience of work before. At university even having a part time job can help students understand their studies better. Secondly it gives the student an indication about what they may like to do after graduation. However, importantly it helps the student secure a better job after graduation. Obviously the value of the placement depends very much on the quality of the placement. Whilst many students find their placement year a positive experience, their may be a small minority who feel they had an unconstructive placement. Job Fairs Although a universities placement office can provide invaluable advice, support and a number of contacts, students have a better chance of securing a good quality placement if they were to be proactive in independently seeking a placement. One way they can do this is to attend recruitment or Job fairs. When attending Job fairs, students should ensure they take with them an ample number of CVs and covering letters. One advantage of job fairs is that students may have the opportunity to apply for those companies which are advertising more than one job. This is aided by organisations which have one application form for a number of job roles. As the majority of placements take place in the third year of study, its best to visit job fairs in the second year. If a student wants to practice their interpersonal skills, then they could attend in the first year but the employers may see them as a time waster. C.Vs and Covering letters The content of the majority of students CVs is often very similar. This makes it very difficult for an applicant to guarantee their CV stands out ahead of the competition. To help, applicants should thoroughly proof read their C.V to ensure there are no spelling or grammatical mistakes. Many managers complain they receive a number of applications with obvious mistakes and therefore instantly reject them. Students should use two pages when writing their C.V and never have half pages. Often it is helpful if applicants use tables to display qualifications and other important information. It should be neat and use a formal business tone. Business students shouldnt use any pictures or colour and most importantly never lie. Its good to include a small section on career objectives and work experience linked with relevant skills gained. A good cover letter is also essential to go with a C.V (particularly at recruitment fairs). Students can create two main types of cover letter and C.Vs: 1. A general cover letter and C.V aimed at a range of job roles and companies. 2. A targeted cover letter for a particular company and/or job role. The latter is often more desirable when viewed by employers, but not always possible. Targeting a cover letter and C.V If a student attends a job fair taking place at their university, the organisers (whether the university placements office or Job shop) will certainly know what companies will be attending. It is prudent for students to find out not only what companies will be attending, but also what job roles are going to be promoted and by which companies. The organisers may even have job descriptions for specific job roles. With this information, students can target their covering letter and C.Vs towards those specific jobs which they wish to apply. If the job fair is being organised outside the university, the organisers will certainly advertise which companies are attending. If they dont or a student needs to know more information, then they should contact the organisers. The problem with large job fairs is that many organisations wont have any specific job to offer, but are generally promoting their company and/or their graduate or placement scheme. That makes it difficult for students to target their covering letter and C.V, but not impossible. If they know the organisations which are attending they can (to an extent) research them and tailor and target their covering letter and C.V accordingly. Researching the organisations is also very important for making a good impression when speaking to their representatives. Students will create a more positive impression if they are knowledgeable about an organisation and the sector in which they operate. Students should also consider at Job fairs (particularly large ones), what type of job they want (.e.g. Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, Sales etc) - and target their C.V and covering letter accordingly. Students should note however that in most jobs there is always a large overlap between these areas of work. Salary range of a placement student A placement students salary is usually lower than that of graduate salaries for the type of work undertaken. Currently the average typical salary in the UK is around 12,000 to 13,500 and in London and the South East students could expect to earn around 14,000 to 17,000. However a minority student may secure jobs with significantly higher salaries (up to around 22,000). Negotiating salary with the employer Students applying for a job should be cautious when attempting to negotiate their salary. Its probable that an alternative candidate with very similar skills and attributes would be happy to work in that job role for lower pay. Many companies (particularly larger ones) are likely to have set pay scales, and would be unable to increase the salary being offered. The only time it would be appropriate to negotiate a salary, is if a student was offered two jobs, and needed to turn one down. Then they could go to the less appealing of the two companies and inform them that unless they were prepared to raise the salary they would have to take the job with the other company. However even in such a case, its unlikely that the company would be prepared to raise the salary. Negotiating a salary after securing a placement. Its probable that an organisation will have a pay scale, and any pay rise is likely to be rewarded as a result of a good appraisal. An appraisal gives a student a good opportunity to speak to their manager and justify why they should be given a pay rise. The problem that a placement student may face is that normally appraisals occur once every six months (sometime less), and a typically a work placement lasts for less than 12 months, and during the first few months of that a student will be settling in. This means its unlikely that a student will be given enough time to prove that they are actually worthy of a pay rise, as salary reviews often happen annually. Students shouldnt use salary as the main criteria for choosing a job. Students should take into consideration what a company can offer them in terms of personal development and opportunities. A placement year is about gaining experience and developing skills, not about the pay, although it can help to pay those debts already accumulated. Typical Business Placement job role and responsibilities Business students in particular can expect to apply for a wide array of jobs, as many job roles will almost certainly involve at least one area of a business discipline. The majority of business students often take up an administrative role within a wider context of a specialist area such as sales, marketing, personnel, or finance. Even if a placement involves working in a team focused towards a particular business discipline such as marketing, a student may be required to be flexible and do a certain amount of finance and budget work, as different areas of work are not mutually exclusive. This is most probably to the students advantage. As many placement students, have had very little previous experience of work, they cannot expect to be a manager straight away. Thats not to exclude the possibility of them being given a very important task and responsibilities, but it is unlikely that they could expect to be given subordinates to manage. However a placement student can expect to help support managers in the day to day running of a department. Broadly speaking their responsibilities may include helping to manage and monitor budgets, arranging and attending meetings, liasing with external stakeholders, helping to compile reports, writing letters and assisting within presentations. Because students are on a placement a good employer may give them an insight into more senior managers roles, and invite them to observe some more important aspects of business management. Students may however be required to do some monotonous tasks such as booking travel/conference ticket, filing and handling stationary orders etc. However they will find that most jobs will involve some element of tedious work. Student should not however be employed simply to make the tea or do the photocopying etc. The types of organisations which offers the best quality placements. Its often advisable for students to apply to larger firms who run placement schemes. Larger firms are likely to offer a much wider range of experiences, and job opportunities, particularly if they are already experienced in running a placement scheme. Larger organisations are also more likely to provide better support and have certain quality assurances procedures in place for any problems students may encounter. For example if a student has a problem with their manager, they may be able to gain advice for the organisations Human Resources department, who may intervene, if required. Larger organisations in addition are likely to provide higher quality training opportunities, as many smaller companies often havent got the resources. This is not to completely dismiss the value of working in a smaller organisation, who may give the student greater responsibilities and more unique insight into business management. Its worth remembering that what suites and interests one student may not necessarily interest another, it depends on what individual wishes to gain from their placement. Most business students are likely to secure a clerical or admin based job roles. If they want to work in a highly competitive environment, then a sales or marketing job would be most suitable. However if they are good with numbers, and are not very extrovert then a student may prefer a finance or accounting job role. In short its what interests the student. Students seeking a placement should attempt to avoid any job which employs them to be a general dogs body, as this would not be much benefit to them. What criteria placement Students should use to choose a placement. Students should keep in mind the following things: 1. The training and development opportunities they will offer them. For example, are they willing to send the student on training courses, even if they are only going to be there for a year (many companies will). 2. Are they going to give the student key important tasks which are going to significantly test them? 3. Will the job role allow the student to build upon their skills and abilities? Will it give them ample opportunity to learn new skills? 4. Will they give the student more responsibility and allow them to widen the scope of their job role as their performance improves? 5. Are they willing to treat the student not just as a normal employee but to recognise that the placement is a learning experience and therefore encourage the student to learn wider than the scope of their job role would usually allow them. 6. Is the employer going to recognise that the student may still have study commitments and allow them adequate time to complete them and are they willing to aid in the students studies? For example support them with dissertation research and make company information available to them, where possible? 7. Although often some tedious tasks are unavoidable and part of normal work, will the students main job role be based around fulfilling more stimulating responsibilities? 8. Is the job role something which interests the student? 9. Are there likely to be any opportunities for the student to gain full time employment from the company upon graduation? Will it get the student a foot in the door? Often it is very difficult to answer the above questions properly before the student starts the job. If a student is interested in a job and believes he/she stands a good chance of securing the role, then they should carry out research to check that the job is what it appears to be. There is little value in a student taking a year away from university only to work in an organisation that wants someone to make the tea and work the photocopier. Dying to Look Beautiful

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Luzia Barclay The title may be over the top: you wont die when you put your lip gloss on, brush your teeth or wash your hair. Sadly though, there are ingredients in many cosmetics that are harmful to our health. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate for example, which is added to shampoos is used in car washes, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers. Its foaming qualities mean that it is present in 90% of products such as shampoos, toothpastes and body washes. It is a very harsh detergent, which can irritate the skin, leading to skin rashes, flaking, hair loss and mouth ulceration. Whereas we would never dream of eating these chemicals, we dont give cosmetics more than a second thought. Particularly as anything that is put onto the skin is also partly absorbed and finds its way into the bloodstream. Once there the body has to deal with these synthetic chemicals. Many beauty products also contain paraffin, which is a petroleum by-product, a mineral oil that coats the skin like plastic. Baby oil is at least 93% mineral oil. It clogs the pores and interferes with the skins ability to eliminate toxins. To lock in moisture is not necessarily what our babies need because, like the kidneys, the skin is an important organ of elimination. To stay healthy we need to eliminate toxins and waste products. Mineral oils, which slow down skin function and cell development can lead to premature ageing, acne and other skin disorders. In 1987 mineral oil was recognised as carcinogenic but unlike plant oils it is extremely cheap. Other cosmetics contain Lanolin, a natural oily substance in sheep wool, which keeps sheep dry. Unfortunately, the majority of lanolin found in cosmetics is contaminated by sheep dip material, i.e. organo-phosphate pesticides and insecticides. Many forms of makeup contain the preservative butylhydroxyanisole (BHA) because it absorbs easily into the skin. However, the US National Toxicology Program labelled it a carcinogen. Cosmetics commonly contain moisturisers in the form of wetting agents (propylene glycol) and humectants (glycerine). Propylene glycol is the main ingredient in antifreeze and break fluid. It increases the skins permeability thus allowing some of the toxic compounds to be absorbed into the body. Liquid foundations often contain a variety of Parabens (methyl-, propyl- or butylparaben). They inhibit microbial growth and extend product shelf lives. They are not only highly toxic but also oestrogen-mimics. The most dangerous cosmetics are the ones, which have a pearly, glittery or frosted effect. Pure aluminium is used to achieve this effect. Aluminium is also used in creams, lotions and deodorants. How do we know which ingredients are safe and which arent? The names of most ingredients are confusing and we assume that the safety controls are carried out, but in fact make up manufacturers do not need to demonstrate that their products are safe. The best advice is to choose products that contain the fewest ingredients. Many products labelled natural are far from that. Alternatively, products can be home made using simple ingredients such as honey, rolled oat, fullers earth the list is endless.
