Black Cohosh For Hot Flashes

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By John Gibb Black cohosh is an herbal remedy that is used for several different reasons. One of the main reasons people consume this herbal remedy has got to be the use of black cohosh for hot flashes. Menopause can be a difficult time, and many people feel that they need the best possible remedies to get through it gracefully. Black cohosh extract is best known for its uses when trying to curb many of the symptoms associated with menopause. It helps with hot flashes, night sweats, and menstrual cramps, three of the toughest symptoms of menopause. It is believed that black cohosh helps to diminish the levels of a hormone that is produced very rapidly when menopause takes hold. The increase of this hormone, known as luteinizing hormone, is what many believe causes the menopause troubles. Therefore, by reducing these levels, you lower your chances for intense pain due to the symptoms. Hot flashes are often reported to be less severe when taking black cohosh. Since black cohosh is also an anti-inflammatory, it can help to bring relief to aches and muscle pains. It also treats coughs by clearing bodily mucus and helps tinnitus, a condition where there is a constant ringing in the ears. You should not take black cohosh when you are pregnant or nursing, which is likely not the case if you are taking this supplement for menopause, anyway. It also may interfere with such medications as birth control, so its advised to check with a doctor if you are taking any type of medication before taking cohosh. One great thing about black cohosh for hot flashes is that there is no recorded toxicity level for it. It is considered by most to be a safe herb. Now that you know all there is to know about black cohosh, you can make a better decision regarding if its right for you or not. Easy Friday Night Gathering

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Gail Leino When plans happen on the spur of the moment, be prepared to have an easy Friday night gathering. You want friends to come over but you don’t want to go through the efforts of a party. Here are some easy ways to keep guests entertained without doing a lot of work. When you’re out shopping for food, make sure you stock up on plenty of frozen appetizers. Already prepared appetizers can sit in the back of the freezer for some time. When friends unexpectedly pop over for a Friday night gathering, throw these easy solutions to snacks into the oven for a treat everyone can enjoy. You can invest in fun and popular games. The conversation will never have a chance to lag when everyone in immersed in laughter and the common goal to win the game. In the same way always have a deck of cards on hand. Although a game of cards is less active then a board game, the same competitiveness and spirit can push the night along. Or you can leave the competition behind and enjoy a quiet Friday night gathering by watching a movie with friends. Try a Hollywood theme with a match the picture to the name game. Look into buying popcorn containers that are easy to hold and allows guests to each have their own popcorn. Old fashion chocolates and candies are also great movie time foods. Give your guests a choice by having a little of everything. Make sure you have enough comfy pillows and extra blankets on hand. If there isn’t enough seating, your guests might find it just as comfortable to curl up on the floor with several oversized pillows. Make sure your house is presentable before you leave on Friday morning. You might want to bring home a few work friends at the end of the day for a gathering and the last thing you want is for guests to be met with the wet towel you left on the bathroom floor or the crusty plates from last nights dinner. College Visit Checklist

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Chris Stout Visiting the colleges that you are considering is an absolute must. You need to experience the general atmosphere as well as the tangibles (i.e. the faculty, curriculum, class sizes, etc.). Here are some things to keep in mind when you visit a college campus. Plan ahead If you want to get a focused tour with premium access, then you need to schedule your visit well in advance. Make sure to visit the campus when classes are in session, so you can experience the full effect of day-to-day campus living. If you are a senior in high school, consider planning your visit during the fall or winter quarter of your final year. If youre a junior, then think about visiting colleges in the Spring of your junior year. This way you are in a position to shop around before you start applying in the fall. Whenever you decide to visit the campus youre considering, just make sure you have enough time to explore. Talk to students and find out what the situation on the ground is If you are visiting a campus with your parents, make sure to schedule some time for individual exploration. Look for friendly faces and ask specific questions. The information that youll get from random students on campus is not the same info youll see on the college brochures. Be sure to seek out multiple opinions from your future fellow students, so that you can formulate a well-rounded opinion of your own. Chat with faculty members Find out what courses are offered that interest you. Research your prospective major in the universitys course catalog. Open a schedule of classes to see whos teaching what course and where. Sit in on some classes if you like. Communicate with professors. Ask them questions and ask for syllabi, reading lists and other material so that you can get an idea of how a particular course (or major) is structured. Meet with a counselor or academic advisor After youve reviewed some of the requirements for your prospective major, meet with a counselor or academic advisor. Get answers to questions about major requirements and time frames. Make sure that you understand the specific quirks surrounding your projected path of study. Visit the financial aid office Stop by the financial aid office to make sure that youve secured all the funding that youre eligible for. Ask questions about grants and scholarships, and be certain that you understand the terms of any loans that you accept. If there are additional campus-specific funding opportunities, then collect all the applications that you will need, fill them out properly and turn them in promptly. Explore housing and dining options If you plan to live or eat on campus, then you need to go to the housing office to make sure that youll be all set. Find out what the living situation is and consider different options (i.e. on vs. off campus). Explore different meal plans and choose the plan thats right for you. Scope out the town and experience the nightlife Make sure you use your college visit as an opportunity to scope out the college town that youll be spending four years living in. Is it easy to get around? Is there public transportation or parking concerns? Whats the area like? Is it safe? Is it clean? Are there things do at night? Do yourself a favor and experience a slice of the nightlife before you commit to a particular college town. If you want good times, dont commit to a school that cant accommodate a basic, enjoyable night on the town. Choosing a college is an intensely personal decision. You are the deciding factor, so when you visit the campus, make sure that you ask the questions that matter most to you. The more you can identify what it is you are looking for, the easier it will be to find the college thats right for you. American Morality - A Study in the Lesser of Two Evils

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Michael Bresciani Evangelist Vance Havner told the story of a boy who brought home a watermelon he had stolen from his neighbors farm and proudly showed it to his parents. They knew he had stolen the watermelon but after looking it over for a moment all his parents had to say to their son was Dont get any more of them because you dont know what they have been sprayed with. The parents knowing the unseen poison on the watermelon might make their son sick or even worse could kill him gave him what seems like a concerned warning. They ignored the command of God, thou shalt not steal and the concomitant effects of stealing that result from ignoring that commandment. Could the boy get sick from stealing? I can hear a line from a beautiful traditional hymn There is a Balm in Gilead, to heal the sin sick soul. I can also hear the warning of God from Romans 6:23the wages of sin is death The parents were concerned for the boys health but not for his future or the health of his soul. In a recent episode of the popular TV show Law and Order an enraged father beat and killed a homosexual man who along with his homosexual partner had adopted his son. The mother a drug addict never told the father he had a son and after being removed from her custody the boy was placed in the home of the homosexual couple. Anyone who knows their bible is aware that killing a homosexual person is just as sinful as being a homosexual person. In the end the man was tried and found guilty of murder and it would seem that alls well that ends well. Before the entire matter was disposed of the prosecutors gave a final argument that was based on the idea that it was the love of the homosexual couple that saved the boy from a terrible life without a home. Here is the choice; here is the lesser of two evils. One might ask first. is a home a destination for an entire life. Has the American dream become an end in itself or is there still something more? The homosexual union was bestowed a sort of reverent dignity because of the couples willingness to do what others would not. The constant daily example of a perverted and sinful lifestyle is ignored for the fulfillment of the American dream. Todays morality labors hard not just to ignore Gods commandments but to deny them and actively fight against them. Can good come from a sinful union? Jesus said it could not. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit; neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Matthew 7:18. The lifestyle of the homosexual couple would do far more harm to a boy if he was taught to accept it than years of shuffling around in foster homes. The lesser of two evils won this bout. Not forgetting that Law and Order is after all only fiction it is the message that we are addressing here and not the program itself. That men can become proficient in choosing between the lesser of two evils was known to the apostle James who saidAre ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts. James 2:4. How many parents today have boasted that even though there may not be much in their childrens behavior that is redeemable at least they dont do drugs? This is the lesser of two evils magnified or perhaps even glorified. Where will it end? Is beating people up OK as long as we dont kill them? Is robbery OK as long as we are not armed? Is stealing watermelons OK as long as we know they have not been sprayed with a toxic substance? This is just one example of a dangerous trend in America that leaves our children with only the choice of the lesser of two evils. This is no choice at all. Wedded Bliss

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Kenneth C. Hoffman As a former wedding photographer, there have been many moments that have earned a permanent place in my memory. That biggest of first steps seems to create either an atmosphere of happy wedding memories or one of matrimonial disaster. The greatest fiasco occurred at one hour before the wedding, when the bride, having been given a few tranquilizers to calm her down, locked herself in her bedroom and refused to come out. No amount of pleading had any effect at all. Finally everyone except the photographer (myself) and the brides mom left for the church, taking with them all the limousines and cars. The bride eventually stopped crying and I had to transport them both to the church. I dont want to leave the groom out of matrimonial disasters. One groom decided at the last moment NOT to get married at all. One hour of heavy coaxing successfully changed his mind and he agreed to go to the ceremony. Half way through, he fainted dead away from the stress and had to be revived by a doctor in the church. Another bride was so happy that she decided to climb a tree in the park. She was very good at climbing up, but terrible at getting down. The groom said no way was he going up there and the ushers had to get her down. The biggest unplanned event happened at a summer wedding when the temperature climbed to over one hundred degrees. This was a tent reception on a large estate with a large, beautiful fountain on the premises. You guessed it. The best man was the first to go in. Next went the other ushers in full tuxedos (rented) and the bridesmaids were quickly stripped of their shoes and thrown in. The Reverend decided that he had nothing to lose and jumped in, too, blessing everyone from the waist high water. The next day I filled out the one inch space reserved for comments on the wedding and two sheets of paper besides. Other episodes include a bride and groom that got locked out on a roof for over two hours, a newlywed couple that disappeared to their hotel roomm for an hour right after the toast to the bride and groom, and a couple who took a wrong turning in the church after the ceremony and had to climb out of a cellar window to get out of the church. I still remember a bride bouquet passing through a ceiling fan to be torn to shreds before landing like confetti on the bridesmaids heads. Though my own wedding was not nearly as exciting, I am occasionally surprised when I meet the happy couples yeas later to relive those crazy wedding moments. Retired portrait and wedding photographer. Tell me your story.
